Need Bike Training

Well I've always wanted to a bike and now I'm starting the process of getting a new yamaha R6 (no R1 I don't want to die just yet, lmao) but I definitely need training & riding lessons anyone knows where to do this in NYC? and roughly what amount I can look into spending and also the other details, like license, insurance premium e.t.c Bike owner please chime in.

where in ny are you? take the MSF course at yonkers or queenborough college- i *think* its between $300-500 but dont quote me because im not entirely sure what i paid when i went... it definitely wasnt more than that... also for me, insuring a brand new 600 sportbike was running me around $3000 a year with just liability but then again, my record isnt very clean.... honestly you will get tired of hearing this but the new bikes are extremely fast and even hopping on a new r6 may not be the smartest thing.... have you seen the new kawi ninja 250? its hottttttttttt.... its come a long way from what it used to look like.... yes people are going to say you will be bored soon but learn how to ride that bike to the max instead of getting on something bigger and never excelling

If you dont mind driving to NJ there are alot of places that offer the MSF training for free but the waiting list is about 9-12 months long. If you dont mind paying then you can probably get a MSF training weekend scheduled within a month. I think it ran me $250 but that was 6-7yrs ago.
I started on a cbr600 F4i. unlike what some ppl might say a 600cc bike is a good bike to start on as long as you dont ride like a complete idiot. it gives you more than enough power for street riding plus you can grow into it. If you get a lesser powered bike, after a year or so you'll want to go bigger anyways.
fyi- i just sold my bike a month ago.. didnt have time to ride as much as i used to. maybe ill get another one in a yr or two but right now concentrating on working on the bimmer.
DEF buy a used bike as your first bike.. bikes are AMAZING as far as resale value. I had my bike for 6 yrs and only lost about $800 on the resale

They basically bolt onto your frame and when you drop the bike, the ground hits the slider instead of your fairings... i think theyre like $50-60....

Quote:
The most popular and viable mounting option is directly to a selected strong point of the frame. Sliders with this design offer the most protection and impact force distribution. The installation of this type of slider often requires modification of the fairing and in some cases like the Honda VFR800, as extreme as requiring the modification of the coolant bottle. For this reason, many choose the first or the third option as fairing modification can at times be quite intimidating. This option is the most popular for serious sportsriders, amateur and semi-professional racers alike as they provide the best protection for the money. One other thing to consider when choosing these types of sliders is where they will be mounted to. Many models of sportbikes offer several places to mount them, frame slider manufacturers all have their personal reasons for choosing the mounting location for theirs and many of them make that choice for the wrong reasons. An example is cost - a location that offers a two short bolt mounting location is cheaper than one using a long through the engine bolt choice. The former being a much weaker location. If you own an SV650 you will know what we mean. Another choice is the use of a bracket so that cutting of the fairing is avoided - see below (Frame Mounted Frame Sliders-Through-Engine Bolts).

Need Bike Training

Take a look at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation http://www.msf-usa.org (I think).
They have riding courses all over. They used well trained instructors, and have a very good program. Years ago I considered becoming an instructor for them, and read all the training manuals. They were really impressive, and will give you an excellent beginning on a bike.
Besides the bike, buy the best helmet and protective clothing you can afford.
Good luck,
Ray

Hey i was that idiot 5 years ago. But then again Ive been riding for 14 years already and with a permit for for 9 years.

www.tramas.com is probably the best of the best when it comes to taking any course in NYC. And they teach you to ride properly. They have courses in Long Island and Queens. Plus if you pass the course you will receive a 10% discount on you car insurance as well as motorcycle insurance.

tramas will teach you everything even if you never rode before. If you decide to go with tramas see if you can scheduale your class so you can be in Ric Remz's class. He is a freakin drill sgt who is in my bike club but he knows his shit real well. He takes riding very very seriously.

My only suggestion if you decide that a 250 would be to small for you is to pick a ninja 650. Even though it has a bigger displacement engine it has less power than any 600cc out there. It has a very forgiving riding position. Its not that tourquey and you can really enjoy that bike. It has a full plastic and it about 3K less than other 600cc bikes. I think the yamaha r6's riding position is way to agressive and you will get tired of sitting on that bike since all the weight will be on your wrists. Out of all the bikes out there the ninja ZX-6 has the most comfortable riding position. and the ninja 650 is the most forgiving. this is just my opinion
