Check engine light, low operating temp
2010 335i, no mods. I purchased another car and this one has been sitting in the garage for the past two weeks basically not driven. The water pump was changed about 10k miles ago. I decided to go for a run in it just to keep it moving. On the way home from a 1hr drive, the check engine light came on. Took it over to Autozone and had one of the wanks scan it for me. Only one code came up. Something about engine not up to optimal temp. The Autozone guy said to take it out and flog on it. I did the opposite and drove it home very gingerly and jumped on here. What gives? New tstat? MAF issues?

It could be an issue with the thermostat stuck open. Was the thermostat replaced with the water pump? Is it possible that you have an oil cooler thermostat bypass on the car?

Didn’t replace tstat with the water pump. Mechanic talked me out of it. I haven’t modded the car, I doubt I have an oil cooler tstat bypass. I’m asking bc I don’t know, do they come stock?

Yeah i'd still say Thermostat stuck open....what are your coolant/oil temps getting to? Should be higher than the 200 mark for both.

Your mechanics an ass. Now he can charge you all that same labor all over again because he didn't take the 15 extra mins to install a new tstat along with your pump.

Yeah, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why repeat the same steps to replace yet another part? Because he'll make more money off you. Find a new mechanic.

Anyways, an update, the CEL turned off miraculously. Glad to see this one go, she was a blast to drive, but a headache to own. |

Maybe he just likes working on your car. Good to hear it fixed itself.
