Arrow 2009 3er to get completely new iDrive and infotainment system this fall?

Quote:
A completely new infotainment system will replace BMW’s current CCC (Car Communication Computer) system in most but not all BMWs starting possibly as soon as September 2008 production, according to unconfirmed reports we have collected. The CIC (Car Infotainment System) will reportedly be installed on new 1er, 3er, 5er, and 6er Series, and possibly the new F01 7er Series, this fall if things fall into place as planned.

Thanks for the article, and good timing if the new system is released for MY09, as we are planning for a Spring '09 ED.

It's ok. That person has similar info to what I got (I saw that person's post earlier and was glad that the info lined up so neatly - I even PMd him/her on another site to try to check our sources) - but I was gathering it in the form of an article, which will give more context around the details.

This is not true:

http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/04/23/up...idrive-system/

Quote:
A few days ago, we have posted in article in which we proudly announced that the 2009 BMW 3 Series will get the new, update and improved iDrive system. The exciting news were posted on most of the major car blogs and at the time, and everyone got excited about it, including us.

Even though we knew that BMW usually keeps the goodies for their new, completely redesigned models, we thought that things might be different now.

Well, apparently, nothing has changed in the way BMW plans everything. Very well informed sources have shared with us that the new iDrive system will definitely NOT be in the 2009 BMW 3 Series facelift. The improved iDrive system will be part of the 5 Series and it is currently being tested in the 5 series mules.

Sorry to dissapoint you guys, but apparently we need to wait a little longer until we'll get to use the new system.

I remember reading that, but it seems that this is new(er) information, lets hope it makes its way to the E90, my lease is up next April and I really want a 335i Sedan, and the LCI is making it even more appealing.

It's looking more and more like it will be.

Jonathan - nice article. That will be a welcome update!

Thanks BK.

It's all completely speculative of course but it's today's speculation, as opposed to yesterday's.

Logic would tell me that the system would start with the new 7 and possibly trickle down from there. I could see BMW introducing it in the new and improved 3er come mid cycle and possible tii? Either way I think it would be best to launch within a single series at a time - get feedback from the public and then next series... the question is should I cancel taking delivery now (July)?

Thanks for the article!

Supposedly those pics are from a 3er test mule, but even so, it wasn't clear initially it was going to be in the 3. Sounds like it's still speculation with a few people knowing more than they are allowed to say at this point.

As an aside, that's the M gearshift and e-brake handle in the photo, and the aluminum trim that comes with the 1, isn't it? Is it possible the photo is from a 1?

Anyway, with as often as iDrive is maligned by car reviewers, I hope they introduce the new iDrive en masse to all models. How great would it be to read a review of a BMW that doesn't disparage iDrive? Imagine if reviewers actually started praising iDrive? That'll be the day.

You don't have to imagine.

Have you seen any of my reviews? Esp. of other cars in Business Traveler magazine

Whoa, thanks for the article.

I'm really happy that BMW isn't resting on its laurels and letting the iDrive just lay stagnant while other car manufacturers come up with great Nav systems that can out perform their system.

To be honest, I find Audi's MMI and Toyota/Lexus's interface a lot more confusing then iDrive. I didn't have a problem at all with iDrive when I first got my car, but I've had friends break their heads with the Audi's MMI and my mom's Lexus, I've used that thing a handful of times and I still have hiccups with it. I hate touchscreens too..

Good stuff Jonathan, as usual. I too am considering a MY09 upgrade, so I will watch with bated breath (sorry, ran out of mints). You know what a gadget junkie I am.
