Belt Tensioner - silver pin?

Hi, I'm doing the OFHG and about to remove and replace the tensioner. The existing one on the car does not have this silver pin but on the new one it does. What's the purpose and do I leave the pin in or remove it after installation? Thanks in advance!

Leave it! you remove it until you finished the install.

The pin is just holding the tension off on the tensioner for easier install. Put the belt on and all that stuff before pulling the pin out. For removal, just use a big breaker bar or whatever you have to release the tension on the belt & remove the belt from the tensioner pulley so you can unbolt it from the block with your torx bit.

At least on this forum I didn’t see it in the DIY, were you referring to a shop manual because I don’t have access to that

Any tricks to getting this pin out? I have everything set up and for the life of me cannot get that pin out of there to put tension back on belt

Insert the correct bit into the hole(torx 45 I think) put some tension on it and pull it out

I used the T50 for the pulley itself to tighten and it wouldn’t come out. And also the T60 and tried to pull it out. No luck. Any other suggestion?

If you can’t get a pray bar then perhaps a cheater pipe would help...

You need to put a torx bit into the slot above and to the right of that silver pin, and preferably with a breaker bar or long ratchet pull down towards the drivers side and you will be able to pull the pin out to release the tensioner/apply tension to the belt.
