What paint protection does the factory provide?

I'm a new bimmer owner and complete detailing noob. I've had many cars, mostly new, but never took the time to properly wash/wax/seal them. Yes...I would run them through automatic car washes. Occasionally I would hand wash. That was then...this is now.

I've done a lot of research and have read the detailing 101 thread and know that the days of auto washes are over for me - I've reformed!

My question is what wax/sealant does the factory put on? My CA says I shouldn't have to do anything to it but wash it for at least 6 months. After hand-washing it twice now, the water beads just fine. Your thoughts?

TIA

First of all it's good to know that you won't be taking your new bmw to any automatic car washes, because prevention is the best way to keep a flawless finish. Second, now that you've done some research, you should be able to wash the car yourself to minimize swirling. Over time minor swirling is inevitable even with proper washing techniques, however correcting something like this is much easier than if you were to take your car to a car wash just once. Another tip is make sure to request not having your car washed when you take it in for service.

I believe the factory doesn't put on any wax/sealant except cosmoline which is a waxy coating to prevent corrosion while the car is being transported. The dealer will usually wax the car when prepping it. I would recommend applying a sealant every 2-3 months for best protection, and I like to top it with a wax on darker colors especially. If you don't want to apply both a sealant and a wax, I recommend collinite, it's one of the more durable waxes/sealants out there(I believe it's more of a hybrid than either).

Thanks 328. Good info.

I'm leaning towards using the CG produsts like Jetseal 109 + 50/50 wax. Based on what I've read here (CG vs. Zaino vs. Klasse, etc.) CG seems to be the most popular amongst those here.

I guess I'll clay it first, again, based on what I've read here - even though it looks/feels perfect. Just didn't know how time I had before I really needed to do it.
