Stage 1 Tune without FMIC, Experience?

Hello, I have a bone stock BMW 335i N54 with all the maintenance up to date and running great. Would you recommend a Stage 1 tune without performance upgrades. I'm only running a DCI. Although MHD does recommend a FMIC would I encounter overheating issues? I am aware Stage 1 is a conservative tune. Thanks

The FMIC is only recommended for the + versions of the tunes. Obiously a FMIC will benefit your performance by keeping temps cooler and allowing your vehicle to maintain higher performance levels at higher heat but it's absolutely not necesarry for the stage 1 (or even the regular stage 2) tune. If your plugs and coils are good you should be fine.

I think the big difference will be heat soak, obviously. I figured that with a JB4 and no upgraded FMIC, I could hit higher top speeds at the track. Basically after a lap my FMIC was heatsoaked and the extra power was gone, same top speed. For typical daily driving you'll be fine, but if you want the extra power on the track you'll need an FMIC upgrade for sure.

Absolutely this. It all depends on what you're doing. If you're not tracking the car then that stock intercooler won't really be detrimental with the occasional full throttle run.

I run MHD Stage 2+ with a larger Mishimoto intercooler with its stock intake/outlet diameters and connections since I don't exactly flog the shit out of it for extended periods on my daily commute.

There is a Stage 1 and Stage 1 + FMIC tune.

Just run the regular Stage 1 tune for your octane.

How about a track day with ambient temps in the 50F's, no FMIC, and stage 1 ACN 91 MHD tune? I'm trying the make this decision for this weekend...

If you have 91 octane and your car is otherwise stock then that is the appropriate tune to run. The OTS maps are conservative.

However, with any tune, it's always worth datalogging.

Also define track day? How many laps? You'll want to keep an eye on IAT and your oil temperatures with any track day. These cars run hot, which is why it's important to have good cooling mods.

Five 20 min sessions at Laguna. It's a 335IS so there are some added cooling features. Sounds like it's better to play it safe and run the stock tune.

Thanks I shall run the tune today then. I'm not saying I won't buy an intercooler soon I just can't wait to see what power my car has right now

Thanks will do. I will update the thread if I notice any significant heatsoak.

overboost on a n54T is pretty good. Not a lot different than S1 map.
