I cannot say that it is a must but it works in particular OEM systems that have heavy EQ processing outputs.

As the OEM amp cannot be removed/bypassed in a Top HiFi system as it communicates with the OEM HU/iDrive digitally, Cleansweep could be used in a Top HiFi system to sum all the OEM amp individual crossover'ed and EQ outputs into one full range/normalized signal.

Then this new signal can be used to interface with aftermarket equipment.
In a HiFi system it is not required as the OEM amp can be removed/bypassed and the actual OEM HU/iDrive full range/fairly flat response analog outputs can be used to interface with aftermarket equipment.

So in other words I can just connect the alpine pdx-5 and we are set to go with good sound?

I just read that the TOP HiFi communicates byt optical wires and by that a much more complicated set-up compared to the normal hifi system.

Harman Kardon PDF about the systems in BMW 1 and 3-Series.
