i will be moving soon to a newer place and want to get a new tv, but don't know where to start. are there any makes and models that i should take into consideration? and what are the prices out there? i am thinking of a 50" one. any sort of help will be appreciated.

But back to the original question, I think Samsung LCD's are very good. If you don't go with Samsung, Toshiba would be a good 2nd choice. For the record, I am moving my 42inch Toshiba LCD from the family room to my bedroom and a 52inch Samsung LCD will fill its old place.

I was planning on buying a LCD to replace my rear proj. until I saw it side by side with a plasma. I got a Panasonic Plasma 1080 bad ass.

As for glare and reflections, my old rear proj. had horrible glare you couldn't even see half of the screen at certain times of day with a wall mounted plasma just put a little tilt in the tv and you are good to go, I have NO problems with reflection and glare.

Samsung is #1....just compare Samsungs vs others side by side. Def get 1080p if you want top quality. If you want a good TV for cheap, you can go to SecondAct.com. They only sell refurbished TV's and are pretty legit. They have warranties you can purchase as well. It's substantially cheaper than buying new.

I prefer Plasma because the dark fields are much deeper than LCD. I don't do any gaming on that tv and never pause images for very long as to avoid burn in. I have an LCD in the gaming room for that reason. So it depends on what you are using it for primarily.

Plasma's are ok for gaming as long as you follow bedding in instructions - I did and now use it for my 360 and ps3 - I game for 6 hrs at a time sometimes and have no burn at all - I have a 1080p Panasonic plasma. Compare a plasma to an LCD side by side - everyone will tell you what looks best!!!

i hear people saying also about the plasma not that suitable for games so that's why i was thinking lcd's as my first choice. like samsung's and toshiba's, are all production lines/models good or only some models?

That has absolutely nothing to do with Plasma vs LCD.

This actually has everything to do with Plasma vs LCD. The typical plasma screen is glass +/- an anti-reflective coating of varying effectiveness. The typical LCD screen (same technology as the screens used with most pc's and laptop) has very little reflective properties.

Try asking the same question on AVSforum.com or better yet, walk into any mass-market electronics store and see which type of screen reflects more of the ambient light. The difference in screen reflections will be far easier to recognize than the shrinking difference in black levels between the two technologies.

I agree, I calibrate screens, and I would always advise Plasma over LCD for the ultimate picture quality, however, if you have a room with lots of light pouring in the LCD will start to be the winner, it doesn't need the anti reflective coating that you get on plasma because they are like 3x the brightness.
An LCD can be a lot brighter, and the new 6 series Samsungs are starting to get almost the same as Panny and Pioneer plasmas for black levels too.

I have owned 4 commercial Panasonic plasmas, and NEC, and the new Pioneer, currently have a commercial Panasonic back on my wall, but I have a feeling my next screen will be LCD.
The Samsung LCD in my conservatory replaced the Pioneer 428XD as it was better in that enviroment, and I have to say I have been really impressed with it, it is only 15000:1 and the new ones are rated at 50000:1, I set one up for someone the other day and was very impressed.

However, it is over twice the price of the 1080p Panasonic Viera screen, and still not better than that, just has some serious advantages, like brighter, no worries about gaming (although if calibrated properly that is not an issue on plasma anyway) and looks a lot nicer!

The Pioneer looked like a digital screen in comparison and that is the problem with LCD, they look digital. Even the Panny Viera screens look digital in comparison.

No mate = I understand - I'm always getting roped in to help friends and family with assisting on the purchase of tv's (how to connect them )etc. I'm on my 2nd Panny plasma now. Great TV's

lcd if you play games....plasma for purely tv and movies...pioneer, samsung, or sharp if youre looking for a lcd

I got my samsungs LCD 1080 46" for just $1600 it's 15000:1
I am pretty sure you can find a samsung LCD 50" for $1800
