Scared to buy my dream E92 LCI
Hi guys,
So I have been saving for over a year and finally have the funds to buy a E92 LCI coupe but all the timing chain issues have got me scared to invest! I would choose another car but nothing appeals to me as much as the BMW, it's gorgeous! Also I do very short journeys, school run and then park up near a station, so need decent mpg tbh if I get around 30 im fine with that. I hear the bigger engines are more stable but I won't have a chance to take her on the open road much so don't want to clog the engine buy not driving it enough. So with the variables in mind, anyone have any advice? I'm almost considering getting one with around 50k and with full service history and then changing the timing chain changed before it wrecks the engine, or even getting one and getting used car warranty. Honestly I'm lost right now because it's the only car in price range I really want. Any advice? Regards, Scorp |

go for the 3.0d if its worrying you..quick remap and you will be smiling at the 320i and 320d engined cars at the side of the road waiting on the AA..just kidding,,but honestly go 3.0d or 3.0 petrol

Don't bother with an aftermarket warranty.
Get the BMW warranty, it's a bit more expensive than others but is by far the best

Are the 3.0 less prone to the dreaded Chain of death fault? Have seen a 325d I may consider as withing my price range, rarely see a 330d. I can always remap later but doubt I need the power locally. Thanks for responding mate! |

Rather than worrying about how many mpg's a particular engine supposedly does work out how many miles you are likely to drive in a year which doesn't sound many if you are concerned about "clogging" it up. Not getting engines properly warmed up and sitting outside your house looking pretty but going nowhere for weeks on end does not do a car any good regardless what size engine is fitted.
My advice would be get the biggest engine you can with your budget and smile every time you drive it! |

if its only short journies then id get a petrol..ive just sold my weekend car(focus st) and got another 330d(e90) to go along side my e46 330d,i love the way a derv drives,,thats why i went derv...i do not do too many miles in the e90..but i do give it some beans when i can on lengthy journies..and you could get something like carly/foxwell nt r510 to do forced regen on the dpf if thats worrying you..

Thanks for all the advice guys, I have looked into the BMW warranty and it's around £48 for the car I'm looking at which was the 320d.
I would not mind the 3.0 but they seem to so rare on the market, maybe as too much fun to part with! Such a pity BMW have a engine like this in such a beautiful car, will weigh up my options and hopefully decide soon. Have waited long enough, and since getting rid of my RX8 last year I need something to bring that smile back 😁 |

I thought the BMW Warranty had an upper payout limit for work?
I can imagine that a cam chain failure would maybe be more than the car is worth? |

Well with it being an Lci model I wouldn’t worry about the chain as the later ones have either A:Been replaced and or came with the upgrades needed.
B: I’m quite sure that the later ones didn’t snap any way unless it had mega miles on it. But if you don’t do lots of miles I wouldn’t even consider a 2ltr diesel. I had a 118d for 4 years and it was great when I comuted every day, but when I changed job and now have a 8 mile a day round trip I have a 330i. And do you think I notice the difference in fuel .... Nope I don’t, my 118d was terrible on fuel on the short trips. And with diesels being blamed for being dirty once again, I personally would think twice before buying another one myself. |

I actually took the leap and got the 320d, I fell in love with it, and so far it's not bad but I know when I get more money saved up I will go the the 3.0 and above...one day! |

IMHO, dump the 320d, as you'll get bored and the engine is nowhere near as good as a 6 pot. Wait out for a 330d, even one with higher mileage is better than a lower mileage 320d (obviously if looked after).
Speaking from personal experience. (320d straight to 335d) EDIT: just saw you bought the 320d, great car to start with but i'm sure you're gunna upgrade sooner rather than later!
