Progman 29.2 Superseded/Dinan flash fries ECU
FYI
Progman 29.2 is no more, a revised software was released by BMW. Whether or not this addresses the lag concern is yet to be determined. An ECU was fried due to an attempted Dinan upgrade, an updated flash system/cable will be sent to authorized dealers. Nothing like going in with the MD80, only to have it cooked and replaced with a MD81. Safest route, send your ECU to Dinan.

Thanks Bubbles as always with the new information. Also, you have to admit 29.2 lasted a very short time - less than 2 months?

The flash failed during the flash loading process and corrupted the ECU. I feel very bad for the unlucky victim.

Just go and get the update. They obviously did something wrong as 29.2 was out for less than 2 months. Cross your fingers they fixed the lag.

Unfortunately, the dealer has to load the new software on the machines first, which can take some time.

Bubbles, any idea WHEN the Dinan dealers will get this new flash system/cable? I was planning on getting this flash in a couple of weeks, but that could be tight I suppose. My speculation is that the fried ECU was just some RANDOM occurance. Many people, including myself, have witnessed issues with BMW tries to link to teh car to flash with a new Progman. They can tell when it isn't connecting right and they do NOT procede (they tell you to come back another day and have it tried again), because if they do procede, it could fault and fry the whole thing. It was probably something wacky like that and not 29.2 "tune defense" related. Ha, watch Progman ??.? totally lock it down and every Dinan flash attempt fries the ecu. ![]() |

So, basically:
29.2 first, then Dinan = bricked car ... nice!

i'd like to know:
1. was the bmw charger hooked up and operational giving 14V to the car 2. was the flashing (jornada) hooked up to a/c as well? i know i've been flashed two ways (on battery, in the parking lot no charger). sketchy. and by the book (on battery charger) and jornada (hp 660lx) on charger. if MSD81 is pin compatible with MSD80 then folks could downgrade their ecu's? ![]() dang my ecu was stolen i got this junkyard MSD80 can you marry it back to the immobilizer? ![]() i have obd-2 flashed many a car and the golden rule is to stabilize the platform (voltage of car, voltage of ecu, hold your nutz that the old ass laptop doesn't crash, cable doesn't get pulled out, don't have anything operating including that fancy turn fan on at 5:30pm mode to give a power surge, don't go opening /closing doors etc. It's very common in the obd-2 flashing community to see folks fry their ecu's by not following the golden rules. I have no dinan training i am basing this speculation on various other car manufacturers that do the same thing. If you are not erasing the whole ecu, but just the maps; typically the ecu doesn't brick. it just fails "CRC/CHECKSUM" and marks the ecu invalid (permanently). Some companies allow the ecu to run this way and some tuners even defeat this code, some ecu manufacturers run in limp mode, and some just straight up die and wait for a reprogram. p.s. the updates to dinan dealers are Compact Flash cards, like that which goes into your DSLR camera ![]() ![]() there is a tuner say we could call them upsolute who actually reads the binary to ensure the checksum matches what they expect, if it doesn't don't flash. If it doesn't download the flash cpu code and forwards to main (USA/EUROPEAN) headquarters for analysis. The customer has no bricking. Then this mythical upsolute company can disassemble and create/ensure a new patch does not brick the code. I can't honestly believe Dinan is that naieve that they would not implement this type of failsafe. seriously. you read in the maps; if they match what you expect, you then overwrite. I can believe that an event could occurr that might frag an ecu like a laptop crashing or knocking a cable loose or the battery charger wasn't plugged in. oversight. very common.

Well, I guess they just got their money's worth out of that warranty. Hopefully so at least. Do they get a loaner while waiting for the ECU?
