152k - timing chain?
Hi guys,
Just after some thoughts. I was scrolling through ebay the other night and noticed a “non runner” 2014 320d going pretty cheap. I read the description and it was a broken timing chain and the car had done about 150k. This got me thinking about my 335i thats just covered 152k and whether or not a timing chain was something I needed to be thinking about?

You shouldn't ever have to do the timing chain. It's a non issue. Sure, there may be one or two experiences out there from someone who had problems with the chain, but they would be isolated instances. It's not worth worrying about IMO.

Are the engine mounts worth changing would you say? |

If you're in there anyway it's not a bad idea. I just got done doing a full suspension refresh and the oil pan gasket on my '07 335i, and the mounts seemed fine so I didn't replace them.

the oil pan gasket is very expensive to replace - mainly because the amount of labour to get to it is ridiculous. seeing you have an xDrive vehicle, that's going to be even more work. basing off the general consensus of these forums, unless the gasket is spilling oil all over your garage like no tommorow, you're best off just saving your time and money. a little bit of oil sweat / minor seepage is nothing to worry about.

Yes. It was simple, but tedious. The hardest part of the whole endeavor was fitting the oil pan back on without getting sealant on everything. Completely drop the subframe by loosening the control arms and tension rods and it's much easier. That's for a rwd car, though. I don't know if there's more to do with an Xi. I was doing a bunch of other stuff, so the car was taken apart anyway. I wouldn't have taken the time if A) I needed the car back on the road in a hurry, and B) I didn't already have the car on jackstands torn apart.

AWD is more involved having front driveshaft, axles, differential, and a few extra bits that need removal. I agree dropping the subframe completely is the way to go. About 5 hour job on xdrive. It'll take longer first time doing it. |
