Has anyone with a swapped steering wheel and airbag had the airbag exchanged under the recall?
I'm looking to swap my non-sport to sport and since BMW issues recalls by VIN, I'd never be able to get it replaced by BMW, correct? Would BMW exchange an airbag based on the VIN of the car, from which the aibag came? I've read somewhere that Honda plans to work with junkyards to ensure used airbags subject to recall don't get installed in cars, but I don't know what that means in practice. |

As a safety issue BMW should do a recall on the car but your best bet is to call the dealer and ask questions.

I didn't know that as I bought my car with the recall done. But still you don't want an open recall in your Carfax.

I have the blue stripe M Performance steering wheel and just had the airbag recall done while they were doing alignment for me. NO issues.

I just checked the VIN of the car from which I got the airbag and there is an outstanding airbag recall on it.
![]() I'll check to see if the dealer would be willing to swap it, but I highly doubt they would as I am not the owner of the car, from which the airbag came. |

Anybody have a way to look up steering wheel serial to cross-reference if it's part of the recall or not?

hi all, i realize this thread is now pretty old but i found myself asking these exact same questions as you all. Just so everyone is in the know, if the airbbag you have came off a sport style steering wheel and the car was PRE LCI then the airbag is part of the recall. The LCI E90 models got the updated steering wheel airbag and there was no variation in the airbag part numbers after LCI release. This info comes from the dealer.
I have an e90 325xi that i daily and i swapped a sport steering wheel into it and the airbag that came with the used steering wheel i purchased was one under recall. So car doesnt qualify to have airbag replaced under recall bc the vin lookup will show the car never came with that recalled airbag. well i called around to several different dealers to ask questions and figure out what the proper BMW part number is to replace the faulty airbags with. I have had two BMW dealerships in MA corroborate that the proper part number to purchase if you are in this situation is 32306884664 At first i got a lot of.push back from the service dudes saying "i cant sell recall items over the counter as parts blah blah blah" yea whatever bro get me your manager. Im not driving around with a grenade in my steering wheel. After talking to the big dawg i got the part on order and will pick it up this saturday. Happy airbag hunting

Just read this Monday for our E53. The recall specifically states that it covers airbag replacement where the owners replaced their standard wheel with the sport one. Hopefully they will do the same thing for the E90.

Do you have any link to that being mentioned that we can use to show the dealers who are hesitant?

This recall campaign involves a sport steering wheel equipped with the Takata PSDI-4 inflator. Some customers may have switched their original steering wheel which was not affected, to the sport steering wheel which may include this inflator. |

This is also interesting from the notice: "Am I eligible for reimbursement under the TREAD Act if I previously replaced my driver’s front air bag module? In this particular recall, reimbursement is likely not applicable, as you would typically have replaced your frontal air bag module as a result of an accident. In that situation, most likely your insurance company paid for the repair. However, in the very unusual (unlikely) scenario that you previously paid to replace the front air bag module “out-of-pocket” upon learning of this possible defect, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Additional information is provided when BMW mails the letter asking you to make an appointment with an authorized BMW center." So, it may be possible to get a replacement airbag, but it sounds like it's up to the dealer. |

Sorry to revive and old thread, but I am in the same position. want to buy a sport steering wheel and want to make sure the airbag is the revised version.
I found this online as the new part, but not sure if it actually is. any help would be greatly appreciated. 32-30-6-884-672

My cars that got the interim airbag replacement in 2016 have the yellow sticker. My cars that have the final airbag from 2019+ have a white sticker. 2 of my cars still have yellow sticker airbags and say no open recalls because parts are not available yet.
Below is a white sticker airbag that has a 19 stamped in the plastic with an arrow pointing to the month made. Last edited by smass; 10-28-2020 at 04:16 PM.. |
