Is it normal that my car down shifts to 2nd gear and not 1st when completely stopped?

I drive an AT 335i, when I play with the MT and come to a stop light it down shifts to 2nd and not 1st. Is this normal? If yes, can someone explain to me why? Thanks...

um, yes it stays at 2nd on ds mode. i suppose it helps u save gas so u dont hav to rev from 1-2. better to just start out at 2nd?

1-2nd is already a close ratio in upchange, so i think u might as well start in 2nd.

no, if u stop, and go from 2 to 1, you will feel a slight jerk. @ m1 you get the most power at stop -> go,, but waste more gas.l

usually i leave it at m2. and just slowly coast

Think of it this way...

"D" mode uses gears 2 - 6
"DS" mode uses gears 1 - 5.

I have never had the car shift into 6th gear while in DS mode... maybe I just haven't gone fast enough with it or something.

I think on D mode when you floor it automatically shift on 1st, but in normal driving always starts on 2nd.
On DS mode floor or normal driving 2nd is 2nd gear...

I've made my car change to sixth gear when in DS-mode, you don't have to go _that_ fast.

i found that putting the tranny in DS (along with DTC) and revving to 2K gave great off the line results. then again, im not the most sporting driver... have lots to learn. if anything though, my method gave my testes a bit of a tingle as well so yeahh...

Ahhh the joy of AWD. Had one as a loaner once, yeah that will give a rush.

As for starting in 2nd, its a good thing, in daily "normal" driving 1st gear isn't really necessary, since 2nd gear feels like 1st in "most" cars it does the job, and saves the transmission from some fast rev jerking. When you want to feel the power just tap back once and M1 is right there at your beckon call.

starting in 2nd gear is a lot smoother anyways.

I've heard this from many sources but from every indication mine starts out in 1 when in "D". Since the AT is adaptive it may be that it depends on your driving style.

In "DS", however, mine never seems to go above 5.

I agree I'm pretty sure it starts in 1, under normal driving the shift to 2 is so smooth you may not feel the shift.

This is correct and no you probably haven't gone fast enough. As i understand it, it will not shift to 6th until 140 or so. Of course i bought the xi and without the sport package so i won't be seeing 6th in DS mode anytime soon.
