Alternative GPS mount?
I have the Magellan 4250.
Not feeling the suction cup GPS mount, or the bulkey GPS mount all together. Can anyone recommend an alternative way to mount the unit on the dash? Where can I find a low-cost solution? The cupholder would have been great, but the damn GPS mount is too big to fit. THanks

On person on this forum (or Bimmerfest) mentioned a small adaptor using the cupholder. i.e. like a little pole that fits in the cupolder and holds the GPS above it. (I think it may be from ebay).
A few examples. Can't find the one I am thinking of. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=219159 http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho....php?p=3182105 FM

Yes, those may work, especially if your GPS is not touch screen, or if it has voice recognition. The problem I had with them is that the BMW holder is too flimsy - that is it flexes too much so things in the cup holder adapter wiggle around too much either from road motion or from trying to use the touch screen. also, the Cupholder spring is not very sturdy, so the adapter falls out.
I actually do not have a standalone GPS. I use either a GPS capable smartphone or a bluetooth cellphone to a bluetooth GPS mouse. I have both the ProClip driver side mount and a Kuda under dash mount. The Proclip puts the cellphone display right at my fingertips and in a good spot to see while concentrating on the road ahead. |

I actually used to use one of these on my old car:
You can get them in black instead of that ugly white (which turns beige later). I clipped it onto the vent. Works great and it's closer for me to use the touchscreen. I find the cupholder ones are kind of dumb because you have to constantly glance down just to see where you're going. |

I too use a Palm PDA running the TomTom GPS software, connecting via bluetooth to a GPS mouse.
I have it mounted at the top left of my windshield. The perfect spot as that is the least used part of the window, and close to my eyes so my eyeball movement is very minimal to go from road to GPS. I use a mount I got from http://gomadic.com Item# PPW-07C Suction cup to window, bendable gooseneck out to compression frame that has one wire running to cigarette lighter, and another that runs to the PDA connection so it stays charged up. (A good thing, as when on GPS constant mode, the screen saver auto-off is disabled and it runs the batteries flat in about 30 minutes). They have all sorts of mounts and accessories and an incredible lifetime warranty. I had my suction cup stop working after about 2 years, emailed them and they express-shipped a replacement, no questions asked.

I dont think that I am going to go with a Kuda or ProClip. Trying to get creative with a DIY. (cupholder, or self install)
I could probably get away with leaving it as is in the ahstray area. It actaully fits perfectly once you flip open the ashtray cover. Its just kind of a pain to look that low (vs up near the front window) What do you guys think yea or nea? (Sorry no pics yet)

If you would consider getting a Garmin, there is an OEM dealer installed option for the dash. Looks very clean.
Perhaps you could just order the mounting bracket and adapt it for your Magellan. |

Let me first say that I am no expert on this subject, and you may get better advice elsewhere.
Circle BMW sells the install kits. These are specifically for the Garmin Nuvi. Link: http://www.circlebmw.com/cgi-bin/acc...records=Search Found pics of the kit from another vendor here: http://64.225.94.154/ShopSite/page104.html |

I personally don't like that installation, they need to drill your dashboard, so is a permanent, I think that will hurt the value of your car I like the way that I set up my Garmin I have it on the side, it fit perfect, plus I rewire it so is always plug in and it turns on and off when I start my car. the best thing is that I can always put the car back to stock or remove the unit. but if you want to install your GPS in the center well if your car, here is the part # 65900429403 it cost $175 here are some pics of my install ( I have the BMW logo as a wallpaper so it looks cool when the unit turns on )

Here are two solutions...the first is the Kuda mount (~$90 with mount and adapter); the second is an A/C vent mount.
A/C mount is a much more cheaper solution though (I believe under $10) and it can be totally removed w/o leaving any indication of portable GPS. KUDA MOUNT . A/C VENT MOUNT

OOPS -- I looked more closely at the picture -- I see you are using a suction cup mount. Oh well -- that might be the way to go. And I can't tell if you ran a power cord over there. |
