Bms intake for n55 e9x, any problems?
I can't seem to find a clear answer but every time I look at reviews of any aftermarket intake for n55 some people say it gives them no issues with coding and some say it gives them all sorts of issues. I just want to ask directly. Does anyone here have an n55 E9X with an aftermarket intake (or specifically what I'm looking at, BMS)? Have you had any issues with it what so ever? Or is it stress free?
Thanks for any input! |

Honestly, the cons out weigh the pros with the only real pro being it sounds cool. It's basically a hot air intake.

What issues did you have with yours exactly, I just wanted a more aggressive sounding spool but if it's gonna idle weird and throw codes then I'm not gonna even bother

Well, I didn't experienced any issues while I was running the BMS intake for three years. The first year I run it with JB4 alone and two more years later with PS2, JB4+MHD BEF.

I personally enjoy the BMS intake for the character it gives the car. Combined with my exhaust setup, the car makes some fantastic noises and really helps to create a unique experience whilst driving spiritedly. I think it is well worth the $200 or so price of admission.

Glad this thread is coming up, hopefully more people can talk about this. Air intake was next, figured new turbo might as well. Haven't found a clear answer on the best intake available.

I used an aftermarket intake, removed it, and sold it. It caused a check engine light (lean condition), and hesitation at 3k RPM. It was an aFe Magnum Force Stage 2 Si. I tried in two cases: removed the aftermarket intake, installed the stock intake. All performance symptoms disappeared immediately, and the CEL would disappear after 3 drive cycles. Removed the stock intake, installed the aftermarket intake: symptoms and CEL returned.
Coupled with past experience on different intakes, I concluded that aftermarket intakes are a waste of money, and I'd rather spend that money on mods that make a noticeable difference in reliability and performance. I used that money and bought a charge pipe, and put the remaining towards MHD. |

I never did any data logging with the stock box, so I don't really know what my IAT differences would be between the two. I still have my stock box, so I might throw it on just to see what kind of difference it would make. Do the Injen/AFE or any other more "closed" intakes have a significant reduction in noise compared to the open style BMS?

The only "issue" I have with my BMS intake is that the little holder that secures it to the bottom of the stock airbox didn't fit correctly. I do agree that the IATs get hot when sitting still and I have never taken it off to monitor the temps with the stock unit. I figure when running 20+ psi that using the stock box will be leaving a little bit of power on the table.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses guys this information really helped. Since it's relatively cheap Im just gonna go ahead and order it. If it does end up giving me any issues, then I guess lesson learned lol.

I have had the BMS intake on for 36,000 miles with no issues. Just make sure you order a filter cleaner to clean it every now and then.

Been running it with a JB4 for a few years now, no issues. I did see slightly higher IATs in the summertime in stop-and-go traffic(stock intercooler too), but that's it really.
I'm ashamed to say that I got it for the way it sounds.... and I'm very happy with my purchase |

I personally never had any issues with the BMS intake. Make sure to get a recharge kit so that you can clean and oil it periodically.

When installing, I would make sure the MAF is screwed in and seated properly as well as connected. People have gotten codes and figured out they forgot to plug the MAF back in. Also, when handling the MAF, make sure you don't damage the sensor that sticks into the intake.
