X5 4.8is, ideal puppy carrier?
we have been taking our now 20 month old 39kilo alsatian puppy out in the back of the old e92 35i for a while now & although he seems happy enough in the back we really do need something more practical now.
My ideal choice would be a F31 340i but they are far to expensive just now, I was considering other makes but I am a bmw kinda guy & having thought about other manufacturers nothing really appeals to me. After briefly considering a F31 330d I have decided I just can't own a diesel, not even if it is a diesel estate. So I thought I would have a look at X5s & discovered the 4.8is I have found a few silver ones for sale & am doing some viewings over the weekend. Yes it'll use a bit of fuel but it won't be used much, around 6000 miles a year is all we do. Pan roof, I drive, air conditioned massaging seats & 360 bhp is rather appealing. Thoughts, opinions & any info, advice on buying/owning a 2006 onwards X5 4.8is would be welcome. Thanks in advance

Have narrowed it down to three first one is a 2006 e53 in silver with pan roof, lumbar support which was on my must have list & is advertised at 6k with 107,500 miles. Two owners from new a comprehensive history portfolio, 4 new tyres & the current owner has had it for six years, only thing that puts me of is the dated interior & lack of I drive, can something be retro fitted?
Second ones a e70 SE also with pan roof but has I drive & air cooled seats, 105,500 miles, £8500 but is on it's sixth owner, has tacky 22" black wheels, needs two front tyres, calipers have been painted red so I would have to spend some money getting some stock wheels & new tyres also the service history isn't as good. Last one is a e70, 2007 sport with 92,000 miles £9500 from a trader full service history but has no pan roof & no lumbar support but does look very nice with the aero kit. All are on auto trader if any of you have nothing better to do & fancy having a look. I think the e70 looks more modern & the interior is nicer but am tempted by the e53, I reckon I could get it for just under 5k & the guy that currently owns it has spent money on it as & when it's needed work, the others have no receipts just stamps in the service book. This would be a car that I'd only keep for a couple of years, advice, thoughts & opinions would be welcome.

All I can say is an E53 4.8is is a beast of a motor.
I can say that as I’ve got one lol. Mines got full custom magnaflow exhaust including sports cats and on proper suspension and ARB’s too. Ive only just removed my BBK’s which are up for sale on Xdrivers. Here’s my build thread for it: The Beasts Build They are excellent but the air suspension is very problematic (hence can bin it for proper suspension - which I can fit and code out), they can suffer with valve stem seals (smoking on idle) and poor batteries will cause lots of dash errors. Check ball joints and bushes as they can fatigue and cause judder under braking. Pano roof is a nice option but again problematic. There’s fixes and cheap options though for most problems so it’s not all bad. Hope that helps.

Oh but it’s bloody quick for a motor over 2 tonnes and sounds superb as standard.
We still love ours.

Thanks Raj, I will have a look at your build thread.
Ball joints on the e53 have been done, seems that Rodger the owner is a like minded guy and has looked after his X5 as I have my e92. I am leaning towards the e53 but am unsure if I could live with the lack of I drive.

I’ve actually replaced the headunit with a double din instead anyway.

Am selling the 335i, I don't want to be paying £1100 a year in road tax & I only drive the car at weekends.
Your 4.8is looks very nice Raj. Am going to have a look at it next weekend, will other him £4000 cash & see where we end up. I suspect it's the kinda car that only certain kinda people would buy

The 4.8is is a good solid motor if it's been cared for and not abused so hopefully if the guys like us then should be all good.

X70 gets my vote! The X53 is nice but it's ancient! Some people like that kind of thing though which i understand!

The other thing is if I did manage to buy it for around 4k, he is asking £5995 how difficult would it be to sell on? It's already done 107,500 miles. Also my 335i has decided it needs a new water pump £675 fitted, it was running fine until I advertised it for sale & the charge pipe has split.
