Is "engine malfunction" the same as...

For the second time in a few weeks my dash has flashed "engine malfunction - reduced power" yada yada yada...is this the same as limp mode?

I get this too every once in a while. In short, yes it's limp mode. There's different limp modes you can have, depending on what's triggering the light. When mine comes on, I feel pretty much no difference. My buddy who has a 328 had his come on once and it wouldn't let him go over 30 MPH.

Did you run the codes to see what it's coming on?

Yes...2e68: knock sensor and 3100: boost pressure deactivation. I've read a little about these and the 3100 seems to be caused by the 2e68...but changing the knock sensor doesn't seem to fix it.

I'm thinking of cleaning my maf and then the vanos to see if that fixes it.

Vanos solenoids going bad can set quite a few things off. One of mine got stuck and I had all kinds of codes. Misfires, cam shaft sensor, VANOS, loss of communication, it was a nightmare.

I drove my car from 37k miles to 88k miles with bad vanos solenoids triggering the engine malfunction reduced power. Should be the first thing on your list to replace.

I cleaned the vanos and the codes went away...so it seems all good...for now...
