88k miles, manual transmission, fair service history.

Cleared codes and replaced both upstream O2 sensors.
Codes returned.
Wire harnesses for upstream senstors passed test.
Smoke test revealed no vacuum leaks.
Ether around intake gasket revealed no vacuum leaks.
No sign or sound of exhaust leak.
Replaced both downstream O2 sensors.
Codes returned.

Any ideas?

Yes, but I do not have them available right now.

Pulled intake because starter was drawing too much current anyhow. Intake was good, no leaks. Replaced starter and reinstalled intake.

Replaced MAP sensor and code has not come back. I did not start with MAP sensor because the code was bank specific (Bank 1) and I would have thought MAP would impact both banks.

Anyhow- after a lot of time and cash, CEL appears to be cleared.

Definitely get your hands on a proper BMW scan tool. I'd recommend either CarlyBMW or INPA with a Bimmergeeks cable.

You are exactly correct. And that is why (2196- Bank 1 Sensor 1) I discounted the MAP sensor. I would have thought that a bad MAP would not be bank specific.

I was wrong. New MAP seems to have addressed the issue.
