Do you want a laugh..........?

Had a casual look at a Porsche Boxster at the weekend as my missus fancies one, we would be trading in my 07 plate 325d MSport auto with Sat nav, bluetooth, leather etc - done 17k miles and is mint

How much did they offer me for the BMW as part ex do you reckon???

His exact words were;

"My BMW contact is selling the exact same cars for £19,995 at the moment, so we can only offer you £17k"

On BMW's website, the cheapest auto 325d MSport is £25k, so somebody would have made a nice profit at my expense

I appreciate its not funny when you are on the receiving end of a figure like that but have you seen the freefall of used prices in the last few months. No one is paying good money for used cars at the moment as sales are sh#te

Remember its only worth what someone is willing to pay. If the guy has a car lot full of BMW's then he doesn't need to buy it so he will bid you in the nuts. If you agree he's got a bargain. If you don't then so what.

Was it a Porsche dealer as they would phone around for a bid from a third party. If you phoned a number of dealers I'm sure you wouldn't get much more. Sorry.

BMW are no different to anyone in business - 'buy low, sell high'

This is all a bit scary for me as I am changing my car later this year.

Right now I owe £14,700 on a 2.5 year old 320d SE E91, and the AA/What Car etc websites are valueing it at £13k-£14k trade so I'm going to have to take a hit or sell privately and have two lots of finance running for a month or two.

Supply and demand. There are far too many used cars in the market place and no one to buy them.

However its time to haggle. They don't want pay too much for your car so they need to give away some profit in the car they are selling. Dealers are desperate to turn their stock. Haggle the price to change. If your p/ex goes down in value so does their used car price. Simple as. Tell them the price you want to pay to change. Start negotiating. If you take offence to the price and storm off neither of you are getting a win:win solution.

If it was me

Why dont you advertise the MOB private for a couple of weeks and see if you get any offers that you find acceptable if you can sell it all well and good .Then go back thrash the salesmen down exclaiming even Porshe are in free fall secondhand and belive me they are no different to any other brand.

If you cant sell the MOB keep it from what i remember its a beauty .

How long before the wife fancies something else ??? cars are a money pit

What would you accept for the 325d

Thanks for the replies - to be honest it just confirmed that I wont be changing cars any time soon.

The dealers dont want to pay good part ex prices but still expect you to pay top dollar for their cars - so they wont sell many!!

If he had said £22k there may have been more thought to put into it!!

Sytner, JCT 600 & Dick Lovett all have Porsche and BMW dealers in the group.

It's all relative. If you are buying the Porsche second hand then haggle and hassle for a better price. I bet the dealers are desparate to shift used stock at the moment.

Well not necessarily....I've just confirmed settlement figure from BMW finance recently and, after only 12 months, its the same as the trade in value.....

Well done. Looks like you planned your finances better than me. I guess a lot of this depends on the choice of car (ie depreciation) and the amount of deposit you put down.

I chose a 3.0 litre petrol engine in a world where petrol is £5 a gallon and I put down £1K deposit.

Unsurpisingly my settlement figures and resale values won't equalise until year 3.

If I had sold after 18 months I would have had £4k negative equity. Having said that I would have been able to buy the replacement I was considering (335i) for £4k less than I can now, because BMW had yet to crack down on their dealers on-line discounting.

Either way, 1-2 year old 330i's are a serious bargain right now.

What's the best discount that's to be had now? I thought they had reduced drastically...

10% is the industry 'norm', so it should have reverted back to this sort of level. Unfortunately, getting it will be tricky, because you can't just tell them to log onto drivethedeal to see the alternative like I did.

Right, went to another Porsche dealer yesterday, Hatfield - offered £20,500 which rose to £21k after haggling. Dropped a fair whack on their car as well.

Then went to test drive a TT 3.2 convertible (new shape) - great car, so much better than the old one.

Dealer dropped £1k on the TT price and offered £22k for the 325 - deal done!

Silverstone Porsche offered the £17k by the way, piss takers.

E90 blacklines for sale as a result!! See classifieds.
