Although the CLK 63 is similar in size and shape, I don't think that they are at all in the same class. I would probably choose the CLK because it costs 140k. The ML63 isn't really in the same class as the X5 4.8i either, an X5 with the ///M V10 from the M5 would be better matched to the 500 horse ML IMO. Oh yeah, and the S65 costs SUBSTANTIALLY more than the 760li, I think that a Merc S600 would be the real match to the 438 hp V12 760li. Oh, and the CL65 costs 200k, whereas the M6 is in the low 100s. The CL63 AMG would be a much better match. Most of the models compared on the Mercedes side are not the equivalent BMW competitors.

Aside from the criticism, I think that that you have come up with an interesting thread idea, nice.

All of them are too expensive so doing a price comparison doesn't count....just one brand's best vs. another's.

Mercedes has a lot of cars that are very exclusive and produced in small numbers, BMW could make a 250k 7 with a V16, but they no that it would probably not be worth the development costs because they know that not many would be sold. Mercedes surprises me with how many ultra-expensive models it make. Personally, I think that it is very cool , but I would think twice about buying a 600 hp SL when I could get an F430 for the same price or less.

+1, I think we should also throw in a Ford GT, a Ferrari F430, and a Lamborghini Gallardo into the [B]Price[B]comparison. For the price, you could buy a 760li ($124,100), and a brand new 335i or Lotus Elise (almost both) for the price of a base $194,875 S65 AMG.

I loved the CLK63 Black Series but the more I drive the M3 I think I'd take the M3 with the manual gearbox. I'm an MB fan boy but I love my 335Ci and I can't think of a Benz in the price range that I'd rather have...

With that in mind I COMPLETELY agree with you that when it comes to the higher-end cars, the Benzes just set themselves apart and yes if money didn't matter I'd have a couple MB's heh

I guess this makes me an old man? I always found the 6 series to be ugly and cramped inside. I've never been much of a fan of the 7 series. The CLK Black is likely the most badass car benz has ever made. I did have to think for a while about C63 vs. M3 sedan because I really like the M3 sedan, but the engine won that comparison. I did pick the X5 though. Go BMW?

Yes, I'm a fanboi. (On a BMW forum, your targeted user in this thread!) No, I won't argue affordability. But I will argue that price plays a big role in why the model lines are what they are.

This thread just seems like your looking for an ego boost for merc, or looking for BMW owners to admit merc is better in this very trite and specific comparison. Sure, make a comparison that puts 200k cars against 100k cars... The cars in each brand's lineup are there to best accomodate their target market, which money and price are all the primary driving factors of. A CLK Black is definately not for the same market as a M3. M3 is a daily driver, which is the biggest difference there. (You may argue that a person could use a CLK Black as a daily driver, but I really doubt someone with that much money would either read these forums or even give second thought as to which car s/he was going to get.) Its no secret or surprise that Merc's model line has much higher class cars than BMW. You might as well compare a Maybach to a 7 series here, since money isn't an issue.
