Rust
Some water got into the rear of these speakers and creating surface rust on the voice coil? Ruined or not?

Have any other pictures? Are the contacts clean and free of rust? I did a little digging on the subject as in all my car audio days I never dealt with rust problems. This can definitely be a problem for you. I'd really have to see more of the speaker to make an assessment but I would try to do something to clean it up. Is the rust only on the exterior of the basket? If it truly needs to be removed in order to protect the life of the speaker, I would use CLR and some 600 grit sandpaper. You may also run into some issues with the rust wanting to stick to the magnet, for this I would recommend possibly demagnetizing before and then magnetizing after (sketchy business here). You can also use some vinegar and a "light" brush to remove rust but if you go this route you will want to you use some baking soda to neutralize it after. Post some different angled pics if possible. I'd hate to see someone lose a set of focals over rust.

Yep the contacts and everything look fine, looks like moisture got into the vent portal of the voice coil Will see how hard it is to clean up Thanks again for the advice |

Yeah man. Keep me posted and let me know what the outcome of the cleaning is. If your contacts are good and your cone has no problem flexing you should be fine.

They very well could be damaged if water got in the vent and to the coil. You might get lucky, I don't know if Beryllium rusts like a ferrite magnet would, but there's still the possibility of corrosion and debris getting into the coil/magnet gap.
I'd start by measuring the coil with a DMM, and gently flexing the cone in both directions while listening/feeling for any binding, scratching noise...there shouldn't be any if the speaker is OK. Next thing I'd do is intentionally spray liberal amounts of DeOxit into the vent and flex the cone to spread it around, and follow it up with a non-conductive electrical contact cleaner to hopefully remove any moisture and/or debris that might have gotten in there. You'll want to let all of that dry up before trying to use them again. |
