Hi guys,

I've been swapping out my front door speakers and underseat subs for some upgraded ones, going from the base speaker setup (no tweeters). I completed the setup, all working fine. A few days later I lose sound front one side front door speakers then the other - the subs are still working fine though.

I've taken the door panel back off and tried connecting the standard wiring back up to one of the original speakers and nothing on both sides. Ive looked at the wiring theres no obvious signs of damage

Is there a fuse for the front door speakers? (although that seems strange if the rear speakers / subs still work? or has anyone got any advice on any other checks I could do here as I'm all out of ideas

Just to add, I've just a spare tweeter to check the signal at the subwoofer connection under the seat, theres nothing for the 1st and 4th labelled wire which i presume are the ones going to the door speakers, but it does work in 2 and 3 (the subwoofer positive and negative)

Do you mean 4 wires at the subwoofer connector? If so then yes that is the case.

The speakers that I got were sold as OEM replacements so I assumed they should be okay. Is it likely to be the case that if there is a broken connection on any of the front speakers then they both won't function?

The only components I've removed are the stock subs and front door speakers. and replaced with aftermarket subwoofers and components (inc crossover and tweeter)

I've now removed the door panels from the car though plugged back in a stock sub and door speaker and the sub works but the door speaker doesn't?

You should be able to measure the continuity (ohms)
of the wires to from from the under seats to the door speakers.

The door speakers in the doors base system have a capicitor
to act as crossover.

"Base audio

The "base" audio system has been around since the early days, although it only made it to the US in 2010.

It uses four channels of deck power (yes, that's right, good old 50Wx4 when lightning strikes, 18Wx4 if you're charitable, and 12Wx4 if you do the actual 12V math into 4 ohms and 1% THD).

The front channels drive:

- 6.5" woofers underseat in 8" frames and molded plastic enclosures. The underseat enclosures are identical for all systems. There is uncertainty regarding whether the duct connecting the enclosure to another chamber in the frame is actually a tuned port, or simply a funny-shaped sealed box. The woofer is not crossover-filtered. The only things taking mids and highs out of the audible output are the driver's own mechanical rolloff, and the acoustic filter formed by the seat and your rear end.

-4" mids in the door. These have a capacitor on them, acting as a high-pass crossover filter and also making the two-speakers-in-parallel a load the deck can handle.

The signal is heavily equalized to the front speakers, and has a subsonic filter around 40 hertz.

The rear channels drive only a pair of 4" mids in the back. This channel is high-pass crossover filtered around 160 Hertz, so connecting a subwoofer to it is a disappointing experience. It is also heavily equalized.

There is a low-current-output remote turn-on present with base audio systems, but it's not controlled by the radio play state. It turns on when the doors are unlocked and stays on for a while after ignition is turned off."

ctuna - thanks for all the help - I got it sorted in the end based on the reminder on the aftermarket subs not having the 4 connections! I'd forgotten I had brought Logic subs for the surrounds (base subs are glued in and I didnt fancy the mess of heat gunning them out) so that sub too only had the two connections

what are the odds, i just saw a similar post about this on a mother forum and i messaged you there too but just ignore that one. after reading this i went to the car and unplugged the hifi underseat speaker and plugged in the base one and boom sound came back on to the front speakers and my sub and amp in the trunk. i literally spent hours looking and reading forums and i barely came up on this thread.
so i just want to thank you for your knowledge!

just one question, what would i need to do to be able to run the hifi speakers?
also, i bought a used hifi system from eBay and it came with the stock amp. would i be able to wire it in to make the sound clearer and better?

I wouldn't bother with the Hi Fi system it's still very lacking in every way.
Especially the Amp.

i just figured out the issue the connector for the hifi speaker has 2 prongs and the connector for the base speaker has 4. do you know if there's an adapter or harness for this? im going to see if i can find one but if you already know of something, id appreciate it.

technic makes harness for the all the system's
He makes 3 for the Base system depending on what you want
to do with it.
They are designed with aftermarket amps in mind.
The Hi Fi amp is garbage it's the worst part of the system
but the speakers from the hi fi system are pretty much crap to.

The two or 4 wire connection at the underseats has to do with the year the car was made
not the type of stereo system it came with as far as I know every car made after 3/09 has 4 connectors

I suspect you have broken that split. In cars of a certain date the connection is made in the door sills and after that its made at the under seat connector at the speaker. If you have 4 wires at the connector the parallel connection is made there. If you don't its made in the door sill. Also there are some passive components in the stock stereo line to make a simple crossover did you remove those. BMW stereo systems are not simple.
