Limp mode and 29.2
No short way to tell the story...I got updated to 29.2 first week of May 08. I have a April 07 built car. Noticed lag like everyone says. Learned to live with it for 6 weeks. Flash forward, last Friday the car goes into limp while accelerating in 6th (manual trans). I have no mods. For those who haven't experienced limp, it causes the whole car to shake under throttle and responds with no power.
Over the weekend it did it two more times, but not every time I drove the car. No service engine light stays on and it seems to reset itself when the car is turned off. Called Monday morning and asked if I could bring it in that afternoon. No problem. I asked if I could get a loaner. Answer get in early and shouldn't be problem. I said I'll get there around 4:00 PM. That should be good the SA says. Took it in for service with two complaints 1: the car is going into limp mode 3 times in 3 days and 2: the car has lag since change to 29.2. The lag I have timed with a stopwatch to 2 seconds after mashing the throttle. Drop it off at 4:15. We'll call Enterprise and they'll drop off a car for you in a few minutes. WTF! We argue for 5 minutes about this to no avail. SA keeps asking me if I'm upset about getting an Enterprise rental. Next day, get call we only found a misfire in cylinder x and low fuel. Are you using premium gas? I go to pick up car and say I'll have to drive it back again when its actually in limp mode so they will believe me. Then drive in SA 335 pre 29.2 car. He said that he had driven my car and not noticed any lag and that it "felt good". I drive his car with him in passenger seat and it feels perfect which is to say exactly how mine used to drive with maybe a 1/2 sec lag. Then we get back in my car which is for the moment not in limp mode. I show him how I can do a two count before boost kicks in. He disagrees with me and says "it's still fast" I leave and then drive about 20 miles on the freeway hoping I can get it into limp mode before service closes at 6PM. (Making runs in 6th between 60-80mph). Can't get it to in time so I head home and get limp at 6:10. Go home and leave the car running so I can get my DVD camcorder. Then I make a 10 minute dvd showing going into and out of limp mode by turning the car off and then driving again. Also tried to get some audio underneath the car under the passenger footwell where there were some loud metallic noise and clicks. Going back to Erhard Farmington Hills Michigan tomorrow to show them a video. To be continued... |

hate to hear about the limp mode issue, but great idea leaving the car running and getting the camcorder.

It sure seems like we are seeing a small trend with the cylinder misfires. Some people have changed spark plugs and ignition coil packs only to have the problem come back. One owner posted that he had to get his ecu replaced (this was after changing plugs, coil packs and injectors!)
My guess is that the limp mode issues have nothing to do with 29.2 - Please also ask and report back what codes were displayed - Should be something like p0301, p0302, etc. Good luck with everything! |

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147781 Anyway, I got the SAME CEL (after 29.2 of course). Misfire in cyl 5. My SA suspected bad gas at first too, but they tested it and it came back 93 octane so they ruled it as an anomoly. Obviously things are narrowing down to 29.2 causing these misfires. There is a THIRD guy somewhere on the board who confirmed his same CEL after the progman update. At least my dealer acknowledges that it's a problem. Congrats on not smacking your SA's face into the dash when he didn't care and said "it's fast enough." Ok, then $30,000 should be "enough" for the car then, rather than $45,000. Great job with the DVD vid to capture the limps and try to capture those GOD AWFUL NOISES. It sounds like I drive a broken down Hyundai at times, I swear. Especially at low speeds in 1st and 2nd gear...CLANK, CLICK, SLAP, CLINK. Stupid valves opening and slapping all over the place...sounds like the POS is falling apart underneath the car now. |

On the misfires, I was getting p0303 but I have not been updated yet. There have been others that have also been getting misfires pre-29.2.
Could be a coincidence, but hard to say ... |

Personally, my misfire happened at idle, which is lumpy as hell at each cold start post 29.2. The other guy on here who had my same issue has the same deal. Honestly, it feels like the car is lumping and misfiring at EVERY cold start...I sit there cringing waiting for the light to blink on for the CEL. For some reason, it was severe enough the one time to actually make it happen.

i am still not sure if my car had 29.2 (feb production/april delivery). i have absolutely no noises in 1st, in 2nd there's a clank at 1,000rpm like clockwork, whether going up or down (researching this i found it was the exhaust valve opening and closing) and I also hear noises in 3rd, at various rpms, like at 3,000 i think i hear it. |

i have nothing to compare it to. the 1,000 rpm noise is only in 2nd, its not a deep thud, it is a metal sound, coming from the back of the car - more like a "ting" preceded by a little creaking, like "crrr-ting". also in 3rd at various rpms, like at 3,000 i believe.
in 1st there is no such metal noise. so my question is, do you happen to hear these metal slapping noises in 1st? |
