Hurricane Michael

Everyone in the way this thing in the panhandle of Florida, the panhandles of Mississippi and Alabama, and Georgia, please be careful. It's now forecast to be a category 4 storm when it hits the coast.

I can not understand why some people do not evacuate when they are well aware of the danger they put themselves in and that their irresponsible behavior puts our brave Police and Fire men and women in peril to rescue them from their stupidity.

That's a L O N G paddle for some blown-out waves. Use the pier.

Be safe everyone, and then tanker some of that water to the Califronia desert, PLEASE.

watching the coverage on the news this morning it sounds pretty scary, be safe out there if you are in the areas impacted.

This morning I woke up to some clouds and light rain from the outer bands. Hope this storm goes down to a cat 1 like the one that was supposed to destroy the Carolinas.

Godspeed.

1. Some simply have to stay. Not just police and firemen but a large amount of medical professionals. Other regular civilians are well intended and plan to stay and help others.

2. Many can not leave. Elderly and disabled for example. And sometimes leaving is not as easy as it sounds. Closed roads, horrible traffic, etc.

3. The media. If you live on the coast you grow weary of the constant exaggerations and ultimately grow callous. Its just a fact.

Water temps in the gulf are about 3-5* warmer than what Hurricane Florence passed through in the Atlantic ocean.

Max sustained winds hit 155 at landfall... Going to be ugly for those who stayed.

CAT1 to CAT5 in 24 hours. I will not be surprised if NHC categorizes this as a CAT5 after analysis. Photos are going to show Andrew-like devastation, and many people are probably already dead.

Tropicaltidbits.com and storm2k.org are EXCELLENT resources for anyone that lives in a hurricane prone area. This hurricane is a great example of why it is very, very important to keep an eye on a tropical cyclone when it forms. They can intensify incredibly quickly. Preparation and prompt evacuation can and will save your life.

Maybe.....where it made landfall is one of the most UNpopulated areas. Lots of National Forests and land owned by the military. I'm sure their will be fatalities but not on the scale if it had hit Miami or Tampa.

True but Panama City is around 40,000 people with others living outside the city. Yes, not Miami or Tampa but will likely be deaths...

Storm surge is the deadliest part of a hurricane. The eye passed over a military base, but that whole coastline is inundated with 10'+ of storm surge and there are adjacent cities that are fairly populated. I'm in Pinellas County and we had storm surge here, hundreds of miles away from the eye of the storm. Hoping for the best, but this thing blew up overnight (literally) and caught a LOT of people off guard.

Seeing the devastation of cities 20 and 30 miles away, I can only imagine how bad it was there.

You were. The problem is, water isn't supposed to be there.

Panama City Beach got waxed too. I'm looking at photos now, these places got completely wiped out.
