Lot better trim kits and drop in solutions available now, but first know what you're options are and what you're dealing with.

Dynavins are plug and play but require and adapter for Logic 7
Any unit may require having SOS de programmed
And you must keep your old unit or parallel mount it for diagnostics
or software updates from BMW
Alarms may also be a problem.
There are some harnesses that claim to eliminate some of these problems.

Yes you can. I have base audio with manual climate controls also. I ended up with a pioneer double din deck I already had.
My opinion is that audio brand double dins will give you the best sound quality, and warranty/support, while other units will look more oem (but may or may not sound as good depending on the specific unit).

You need to prioritize sound quality, functionality, need for apple/android integration/CarPlay, and look and feel.

Then it'll make it easier to sift through your options.

If you do go with a standard double din, there are very few options for manual climate control bezels, with most of them putting the deck below the controls.

My installer ended up making me a custom bezel using my oem piece. I think I have pics and info if you follow link in my signature.

I am also considering upgrading my Base head unit in my 2011 335i. I've read most of the posts about this and have been very hesitant to attempt any changes. However, it appears that the PAC RP4.2-BM21 wiring interface solves most of the problems including the SOS display. Is this device (or similar units) recent tech that solves a lot of the issues described in the various threads about replacing a head unit or do the same issues still exist...mainly, needing the stock HU for diagnostic purposes? I'd love to add a Car Play head unit but don't want to introduce headaches...especially since the aftermarket solutions are not exactly OEM-quality in appearance.

With the base system, there is less need for the stock HU for diagnostics. I coded mine for $676Hifi and built around it, but it is pretty easy to swap in a new deck with little negative affects (if at all). Concern was mainly for those with iDrive, IIRC. Bottom line, I haven't heard much of anything in the way of aftermarket deck issues other than those only associated with that particular deck (ie its own problems or limitations rather than interface or affecting the car).
