What is soft stop

Having just been looking at the specs of cars following Lukes post I have noticed that my 335D comes with something called Soft Stop.

What is that?

[nerd mode]

Soft Stop guarantees a smoother journey for all occupants. It allows the car to come to a perfectly smooth halt by releasing a small proportion of the braking pressure at the end of the braking cycle. In the event of an emergency, Soft Stop becomes inactive in order to achieve the shortest stopping distance.

[/nerd mode]

In fact, I just realised, that was equally geeky doing the whole "nerd mode /nerd mode" thing. If you want to all run and leave me once we get to Goodwood shouting "Geek freak" I'll understand.

I'll go and find some flat cap wearers to discuss the benefits of brake fade compensators...

When my dad ran an RR garage they had to teach the chauffeurs to do that manually when they took delivery.

Erm I actually do that naturally when everyday driving, OK not a chance on a hardcore hoon but you don't want that either in those situations!

I do it normally on every braking - it's something I was taught to do. Sadly in answer to the original poster its something BMW invented that actually does precisely nothing - or at least on an automatic it does nothing. I've tried and tried but I can't detect it doing anything at all.

Nada, nothing.

This was kind of my thinking. I had assumed it was something along these lines and I am sorry I can't say I have ever noticed this "feature" in action.

Maybe whilst my car is in the garage (waiting on a new bit for the heater) I should ask them about it.

Yep - have to agree with you, I always do the soft stop myself - and always have done.

Also tried to see if the 'soft stop' in the 335d worked - and it doesnt. It just feels like it always did with other cars (you lunge forward and then back in the seat) if you leave your foot fully planted on the brake without progressively lifting it off at the last instant.
