Wastegate Advice Needed

Apologies as this subject has probably been beaten to death, but I need some advice on how to proceed here.

I brought my 335i in for service to have them take a look at the metallic rattle when I accelerate. The did a software upgrade, and did something to the heat sheild, but couldnt really tell me what the rattle was......got the car back and the rattle was still present.

I then brought the car in a second time, I went for a drive w/ the mechanic and he said it was the wastegates. The SA called me back and said they needed to replace the actuators and the problem would be fixed. I picked the car up last night...and what do you know....the rattle is still there.

Any advice on what I should do from here?? I not mechanically inclined when it comes to engines, but I feel I'm getting the run around. Is this acutally an issue I should worry about, or should I just deal with it. Im really pissed, but dont want to call the SA yet without some opinions. Anything would help...thanks!!

the wastegate issue is documented to be noticible at 3k or so rpm and droping off the gas.

my car has a rattle around 1500-1800 rpm and they said it was normal on all manual 335i's....

which rattle is yours ?

I have the same rattle around 1500-1800 rpm and they said the same thing, I dont understand how a company like BMW can engineer a car thats designed to rattle.

(my car is also in for the wastegate problem)

I had the software upgrade, which didn't help. But, eventually had the wastegates replaced. It was a 2.5 day job, and the ticking sound (and perceived turbo lag) is gone. There is a slight rattle which sounds like the heat shield shaking, but not the annoying ticking sound.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one with this problem! Man this has been annoying me for the past month or two.

It occurs during acceleration between about 1600-2000rpm for me. It's so annoying. I thought there was something wrong in the dash. I wonder what it really is.

My car went into the shop wednesday 9am to get both turbo wastegate actuators replaced. The SM said their info from BMW told him it was a 2 day job, but asked to have the car 3 days because it was their first time with this procedure. I call on the 3rd day to check status, they didn't call me, and they tell me the car wont be finished and it will need to stay there the weekend and they hope to finish it monday. I am worried that they f-ed something else up and don't want to tell me.

Has anyone else here had this work done and how long did it take??

This was the exact work I had done to mine for the rattle. It only took 3 days, but it didnt fix the issue. The rattle is still there. The SA said he would take a ride with me to hear the noise for himself now....and that it is probably something normal. Im really pissed at the situation.

i just noticed at 1500rpm a slight ticking at slow speeds with windows down on quiet streets (1st gear) when decelerating....but only for first 60 sec of driving after car has been sitting for about 2 hours. then it goes away.
it sounds like it comes from under car though. could it be air flow through primary cats or just oil lubricating all parts?

solved

If you guys are wondering how to tell if you have this noise or not open your windows and rev the engine, let go and you will hear what sounds like a buzz or ticking noise. This is how BMW finds it. Rev her up and let go (take it to like 3000 rpm and let go)

I hope this helps. I have the noise as well and it is going in in 3 weeks. our servvice in Canada isn't so great, you guys are lucky in that regard. We also pay close to 20% more for the cars then in the US.

All, take it by BMW and have them look into the noise your hearing. I had the loud ticking noise, and a fluttering noise when decelerating. I posted a thread here about a week ago on how BMW fixed my problem. They replaced both turbos and manifold. It comes as a one piece assembly. Not sure if dealers are stricter in the states, but here in Germany BMW seems to be willing to take care of it's customers.

What was supposed to be a 2 day job, 3 days max, is now at 5 days and counting to replace my waste gate actuators. I am furious, the dealer service is dragging their feet. I told them I want my car completed. My car is sitting there in their shop disassembled, while the techs stop and do oil service on somebody else's cars.

just to add my experience into the mix, i brought it in for 30k, told them about the problem, even spoke to the tech told him i've heard its the wastegate and he said no problem he'll fix it. Later on in the day the SA calls me and tells me they need to change the turbos and gaskets out. Got my car about 3-4 days later and the noise was gone, but about 5k miles later the noise is starting to come back. Hesitant to take it in again and have it sit there for 3+ days.

I'm gonna tell my SA the muffler bearings need to be re-greased.

I have the problem as well, 1800 rpm range, goes away after it warms up. If the gam has opened that bit one wonders how far it would go eventually and if it seems to return, maybe get it done at 49,900 miles...

It's done! One week in the shop and finally have a rattkle free car. So far, so good. There is no rattle and the turbo lag I sensed before seems a bit less. I was angry at how long it took, but after speaking with the very experienced tech, I was less upset. He told me how much crap he had to remove from the engine compartment to access the turbos, including the damn radiator. He was very careful and said he adjusted the newly designed wastegate actuators to the T. Yes, he said the new actuators are a different design than the old ones.

Did I mention my car is rattle free?
