Oil Filter Cover Replacement

I changed my oil the other day and noticed that the lip that holds the big o-ring is starting to break. I've ordered a replacement oil filter housing cover. Will I need to drain the oil before removing and replacing the cover, or will it not make a difference if the engine has been allowed to sit for a bit?

You won't need to drain. When you unscrew the cover, just lift it out gently as the filter chamber is full of oil, but will drain away once air is introduced into the chamber.

I recommend replacing it with an OEM part. There have been a few instances of aftermarket cheap covers cracking and leaking oil everywhere.

Just to be clear, you'll need a new filter also. I suggest getting the OE/OEM MANN HU-816 filter.

I ordered part number 11-42-7-525-334 and a new o-ring (11-42-8-683-168).
I just replaced the filter when I changed the oil. It should still be good, right?

Probably so, but messy. I'd rather work with a clean dry filter for the $8 they cost.

I suggest getting the OE/OEM MANN HU-816 filter. __________________ A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
