7 speed double clutch tranny coming
At the risk of posting a repost, I just found this on the BMWUSA website, it sounds like BMW is bringing over 5 diesel motors as well...
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...n/Default.aspx For the first time, 7-speed sports automatic transmission with double clutch for the models BMW 335i Coupé and BMW 335i Convertible. The world’s first 7-speed double clutch transmission designed for high performance engines, shifting without interruption of traction for unequalled dynamic acceleration, optionally automated or manual, unique combination of the comfort of an automatic transmission with maximum dynamic performance, further optimised acceleration and fuel consumption figures. |

def gonna be cool. but its gonna be slower then the M3's tranny and i cant see it being that much faster then the current 335i tranny. so what is the advantage? launch control, which wouldnt yeild anything since this is a FI motor and likes to boost for launches.

That is what I am hearing too. I am holding onto my suspicions about a tii with DCT optional for mid-year release.

1. This is a press release from BMWUSA...if it wasn't going to be offered in the BMW 335i's in the USA, then this wouldn't be a BMWUSA Press Release; it would be from BMW in Germany.
2. I will have the DCT tranny in my next 335i. ![]()

The most important question is how much torque the new DCT tranny can handle? M3 has 300 lb/ft just like X35i, will DTC handle a 50% increase of torque? I doubt that since there is no cars except Veyron that huge torque.
Volvo has recently introduced this teqnology with a gearbox from Borg-Warner, this gearbox takes max 300 lb/ft torque. Wolkswagen (Audi) has not introduced this gearbox in high torque cars, like big diesels. Porsche has not introduced this to 911 Turbo, only 911 S. BR /Tobias |

442 lbft to be exact.......
See document below for excerpt from brochure :"For the first time it is now possible to make the benefits of the double clutch transmission available at high levels of output and in combination with rear-wheel drive and engines with increased engine speeds. The sports automatic transmission with double clutch is designed for engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm and torque levels of up to 600 Nm (442 lbft) and is therefore ideally suited to the character of the high-revving in-line 6-cylinder engines of BMW". .

It says right in the press release, this transmission will ONLY be in the coupe and vert, NOT the sedan... soo.... ummm sedans FTL?
![]() That kinda sucks though, because I love the look of the facelifted sedan, why would they not put the new tranny in the new sedan that the press release is about????????????? -Rick |

Did anyone else notice that this press release also confirms the new I-Drive system?
![]() Premiere for the new generation of the operating concept BMW iDrive. The operating system BMW iDrive is optionally available in the new BMW 3 Series for the activation and control of entertainment, information, navigation and telecommunications functions, whether standard or optional. The new generation of iDrive is available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Professional. What is more, the new iDrive supports multi-mode operation by voice entry. With the new iDrive generation, BMW extends its lead over comparable systems made by other manufacturers in terms of display quality and intuitive operation. Using the four direct selection buttons grouped around the Controller, it is especially easy to switch spontaneously between CD, radio, telephone and navigation functions. The functional bookmarks are supplemented with three control buttons. Control Display with high-resolution graphics and variable layout. The new iDrive in the BMW 3 Series is presented with a 8.8 inch Control Display whose dimensions surpass all graphic displays available to date in the automobile field. With its high image resolution it offers significant improve-ment in the display of detailed graphics. The structure of the user menu also makes it easier to locate desired functions. All functions controllable by iDrive are listed in the starter menu. Hard drive for audio files and navigation system. The features of the navigation system Professional include a hard drive integrated in the vehicle. The storage medium with a capacity of 80 GB provides outstandingly fast access to digital maps for navigation purposes and can also be used for an extensive collection of music files. The system enables music files to be transferred to the hard drive from a CD, MP3 player or USB stick. World premiere for unlimited internet use inside the vehicle. BMW ConnectedDrive makes BMW the first automobile manufacturer in the world to enable unlimited use of the internet inside the vehicle when stationary. Internet access is available for the new BMW 3 Series as a special equip- ment option at attractive flat-rate conditions. The transfer of data is based on EDGE technology (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), which unlike UMTS offers full geographical coverage and is three to four times faster than the mobile phone standard GPRS. The basis for internet use in the vehicle is provided by the further developed functions of iDrive. By pushing the Controller in different directions, the mouse can be moved across the web page shown in the Control Display. -Rick |

o yea FWIW, all the info other then was is stated on BMWUSA main page of furture models is from the PDF link on the bottom which is the INTERNATIONAL press release kit, meaning it deals with everything that will be available everywhere, so we cant say other then the face lift e90 coming this fall and the idrive that will be coming, what will come to the US and what wont come here.
"Until then, explore the International Press Kit. Note: the European models includes slight variations from those that will be available in the U.S. The U.S. press release is coming soon" i guess we will wait until then. |

I wouldn't get too hung up on torque capability list by the OEMs. Sure they matter but there are plenty of transmissions holding way more power than the car+tranny were originally intended to deal with.
As long as we're racing on street tires or drag radials w/RWD cars and not doing something like rev limiter launches with AWD or slicks, it's kinda unlikely something will break at the current power levels IMO. I'm amazed the manual trans 335s run as well as they do because the shifters are such a POS and the automatics are really nice. My 2008 335xi is a manual and I can't wait to put a real shifter on it. I'd love to see a sequential manual in a 335 and not just the M3. Given the other (non-BMW) cars that have them, it's probably a matter of time. ![]()
