Another Dinan Stage II Review

Just got my Dinan Stage II flash Friday. Before I give my comments, be aware that BMW will no longer COPO these cars after 9/1/08. I confirmed at the dealer and saw the information letter clearly stating this. All cars prior will be grandfathered. Does not make a difference for private sales, but for a guy like me who just trades at the dealer, it can make a difference.

Anyway, the flash is AMAZING. I had been researching and on the fence for this tune for months and I can tell you I am glad I went for it. I have steptronic and the initial pull to 60 is unblievable compared to stock. On the freeway, the car effortlessly went from 80-120 with plenty left.

Compared to stock, I feel like the power is smoother and still gives you the stock "jerk" if you want it. I did notice the exhaust note is a bit deeper. I have let friends drive it and they cannot believe the difference.

Granted, the Dinan is not cheap and we all know the debates over whose piggyback/chip/etc is better so I won't rehash. All I will say is that BMW is on the prowl for Mods and at least for now, Dinan is still the affiliated company. However, looks like that is clearly changing.

This is my first BMW and first "sports" car so the whole tune thing is new to me. Now that I have the flash, I am ready for exchaust!!

COPO would be the sought after 60s muscle cars from GM......ZL1 '69 COPO Camaro is one of my all time favorite cars......My uncle used to race them professionally when they first came out. He still has a set of original heads in his garage!

The ultimate sleeper of all time

back on topic, its a shame that BMW is not going to CPO Dinan flashed cars, that kind of kills the whole point of the Dinan if you have significant mileage on your car already.

I'm not doubting the non-CPO info, however, with the MULTITUDE of rumors for a year+ of "Dinan going bankrupt", "Dinan breaking ties with BMW", "Dinan warranties not honored" etc etc, I would like to see some more substantiated evidence. I can see one dealer here or there having a fit and not CPO'ing the car. Really, they should just flash the thing back to stock, check it out and make sure it runs as it should, then CPO the thing.

If the non-CPO-ability does turn out to be true...well, that's very annoying, and yet another reason for others in a situation like mine to hold their breath and wait for the Conforti Shark for a few more weeks...

There are a bunch of people who've gotten the Dinan flash from Thompson here in PA. Can anyone who's gotten it there give Dan a call and ask in an attempt to confirm? I could call, but, I don't have the tune and he's probably sick of me bugging him with questions.

It's true. I've seen the letter too. Here is a copy:

Ybbiz has already done some research and believes this will not impact BMWFS and their leases.

Wow, thanks for the PDF.

Good Lord, BMW is basically putting us in a corral and shuttling us like cattle towards the MB/Audi dealerships. What a bunch of continual BS we are fed as unfortunate BMW owners who, God forbid, have a passion towards performance.

"Vee vill flash zee car with zee program to slow your car down and give lots of zee turbo lag! Zis will evectively force you to get one of zee tunes. If you then get zee piggy-backs, vee vill void zee warranty! If you get zee Dinan flash, vee vill not pay you jack for zee car if you want another vun and try to trade yours in!"

Well, I'm just going to continue praying to the SharkEdit/Tuner gods that they have THE sollution soon.

WHAT??? I'm not fully understanding the cpo/dinan thing.
So if I already have the flash, will I be able to cpo my car in 2 years? Am I grandfathered in since I have the flash before 9/1/8 OR does the car have to be CPO'd before 9/1/8????

I'm not sure what the answer is to that question. I only posted that pdf so as to clear up the confusion on whether this was a rumor or not.

How can you CPO your own car? Isn't CPO the status a dealer gives to a used car? Do you mean extended warranty?

If true, I will be unloading the car very soon and either picking up a c63 or M3. This is BS!

Thanks for the link, I think this could impact leases as well, but who really knows?

I guess my trade-in value just went down

Guys, this is NOT a big deal. If you already have the flash, then your car still CAN be CPO'd. That is pretty clear.

As far as impacting leases, there is no impact on leases. All you do is turn your car back in at the end of lease. If you lease a car, and the car is in a wreck while you are leasing the car, the dealer still takes the car back at the end, and you don't get "dinged" for anything - one of the beauties of leasing a car.

When you are in the grip of the internet's web of fear and paranoia, let common sense be your guide.

You're fine. Relax. Deep breaths. As far as leases go, this news is irrelevant.

I see you finally adjusted your avatar.

Come 50k, I'm going to gut the car and put in a roll cage
