Try target eddie bauer collection. It's under a hundred bucks and I used it for two months backpacking through Europe so it'll stand up to a decent amount of abuse.

Deuter Futura line is awesome. Great suspension and light, too. Not sure how high their sizes go (42 I think, which for an long trip would be small unless you pack light). On an extended trip you'll want a nice suspension that fits your torso well. I'd hit the local REI and see what you like best. Kelty, Osprey, Mountain Hardwear, and Gregory packs are all good, too.
You can usually find whatever you like cheaper online, too. |

I reccomend the Osprey pack. If you plan on using the pack after your trip, get one that fits you and is comfortable to wear. Check out your local REI.

ive had an oakley backpack for 5 years thats seen a lot of action. its still working (zippers, handle, straps intact) and is in AWESOME condition. id say todays equivalent is this:
http://oakley.com/category/505 (i noticed that the "surf pack" was used in national treasure 2, if that helps )

Mountain Equipment Co-op!!!
www.mec.ca They have the best quality backpacks at the very best prices, period. You can spend 2 to 3 times the price and you won't get the same quality and features. I should mention that it only applies to MEC own brand of packs, as I find their packs to be the best value and quality. |

So far I've narrowed it down to these 2... do you think I can carry these on planes as carry-ons?
Osprey Atmos 50 (I can get it for around $150) http://www.rei.com/product/748725 and the North Face Terra 60 (I can get it for a little under $130) http://www.rei.com/product/770386 what do you guys think also planning on getting this sleeping bag. http://www.rei.com/product/731835?cm...Sleeping%20Bag |

I heard this is a pretty good bag. You can get it in the U.S.

just go to an outdoor/camping/boating store and look around. theyre going to sell the highest quality products. find the bag you want and look for it online for a better price.
I would recommend northface. they are obnoxiously popular, but they are also very well made bags bags. also arcteryx. these products are even better quality than TNF, but you also pay for it. You probably wont be able to find a bag for under $100, but i would just go ahead and make the investment, the bag will last you for the rest of your life. LL Bean probably sells pretty cheap, decent quality bags too. |

Yes, Arc'teryx bags are very high quality but they are also very technical and a bit pricey. If you want Arc'teryx quality but you don't want to spend the money, buy Mountain Equipment Co-op packs. Arc'teryx was started by former MEC employees.
In my opinion, MEC is the king of packs and they're the leader in pack innovation, design, and value. Almost all Canadians use MEC packs. They're very high quality! |

I ended up going with the NorthFace one because it looks cooler and I found it online for $110 no tax and free shipping... Can't wait.
Thanks everyone for the input, I was really interested in the Mountain Equipment Co-Op pack, but I can't find any to try on, and I just wasn't comfortable with buying without trying it on for size. I'll let you guys know how it feels when I come back from my trip...if I remember... lol |
