Is it Wirth fixing this car?
Morning all I'm new here but really need some help and some moral support.
BMW 335i 2007 - Purchased in 2016 with 80.000miles for about 8.000$ - Showed immediately misfiring issues and indy changed engine with a 48.000 miles one. - Also flywheel and clutch where changed; flywheel was showing weird wearing signs and since everything was disassembled decided to change those too - Cost for all this was (I may not remember right) about 8.000$ (?) but might be wrong Car has been running great, body conditions are really good - Installed a new BILSTEIN+EIBACH kit 1 year ago; - Alternator belt was replaced (400$) - Valve cover gasket replaced (1.200) Car has being serviced regularly with good quality oil and parts (I do my oil change). Car lately showed rough idle issues that would disappear after warming up; Power has been lower lately and after pushing hard I would het the low power message. Car was not perfect but still 100% drivable! Indy said - Turbos are worn; - Small misfires from 1 or 2 cylinders; - To fix the rough idle they - Checked compression --> all OK!; - Checked and fixed a small vacuum leak; - Checked smokes --> all OK!; - Checked carbon residues in the air intake --> all OK!; - Switched injectors from misfiring cylinders; changed injectors but would still do it so put back original injectors I paid labor for getting the car back as its was before (800$); turn on the the engine and clearly 1 cylinder misfires --> CAR is now impossible to drive Left the car there. He calls me and tells me that at his risk he'll try to change all injectors (some have different injector index..). If it doesn't work he'll pay the cost, if it works I have to pay for about 2.500$. My big questions are: 1) Why can't I have my car as it was before? I though it was a minor rough idle issue, the car came back way worse than when I dropped it; 2) In case injectors fix the issue is it worth spending all those money on my car? My idea is that I've spent too much? especially considering I'd fix a car with, we know has some very weak TURBOS....which might fail at some point. 3) Would you keep it or sell it? I'm desperate |

If someone would pay me 1200 to replace valve covers I would quit my job in a heart beat. Whoever you have been going to is ripping you off.
Honestly you must have spent what the car is worth in repairs and you are still on OEM turbos. Jesus. |

Sorry I forgot to mention in this that one other reason why it was replaced is because previous owner made a "home made" fixing on one of the injectors damaging the housing of it and make it (according to him) impossible to house properly the new injector

Even if true there are know fixes for that issue. Replacing the head would have been cheaper than engine swap as well. What happen with the original engine? Whether is worth fixing it depends on you. Is what you want to do. I would fix it. Either myself or at another shop. No shop will take on gamble with set of all new injectors. They are probably scamming you. They probably figure out is cheap easy fix and betting on you to shell out for "new injectors" when running properly.

If it's worth it is completely up to you. No one here can make that call for you, except what would make sense for us, in our financial situation and how much we like our car and/or want to hold onto it. But as others have said, you need a new indy and a second opinion/diagnosis. It sounds like this shop saw you coming from a mile away and is taking you for the proverbial ride, on your dime.

Sell it. You'd be happier with a different, more reliable car.
Also +1 to your mechanic is screwing you over.

I agree with tisdrew to an extent. Sell it. If you were the kind of person that would do this work on your own it would be a different story, but paying someone else to maintain this car is a loosing battle. Especially when that someone else is milking you hard.

Your mechanic is taking you for a ride, he knew he had you by the balls when you agreed to an $8k engine swap for misfires. Hell, the engine he put in your car was probably pulled from somebody else he ripped off and said needed a new engine. That is if he put in a new engine in your car at all..
Car is probably worth saving, just bring it to a more reputable shop. I would guess he has a set of random used injectors laying around that he wants to sell you for $2500.

That's a lot of money. If you decide to keep the car I would have the car diagnosed by a different shop. If the problem was the injectors I'm sure you can pay less than $2500 pretty much anywhere else. If possible I would take it to a shop that has experience with the N54.

If you want to keep it running and not do the work yourself this car will cost an arm and a leg. But DIYing everything is very affordable. Just need basic tools and time for most of the things. |
