How do I know what MSD/ECU version I have??

Hey guys, I just got my V3 and map switcher and I'm all ready to go. However, with all the MSD80/81 and v29.2 hoopla stirring up, I'm confused as to what I actually have.

My story: E92 6mt built in 10/2006, received 12/2006. Never went in for any type of ecu updates UNTIL 1/2008 due to some electronic glitches here and there. I have been running v2 flawlessly ever since the update, with no real concern of the newer software due to it not being an issue then. Now, I do have the newer "silver" Idrive interface, as some have mentioned as an indicator of the dreadful MSD81/v 29.2 in your car. Is this true? Can anyone clarify? Am I "doomed"?

Basically all I want to know is if I CAN run the non-doomsday map WITHOUT tripping the "Warranty Gone" code. Oh yea, one more question- with the map switcher, which map is activated when "on" is pressed on the key fob?

If the last time you went to the dealer for a software update was 1/08, it is highly unlikely that you have 29.2 or later software versions. To be safe though, you can run the Doomsday version of the map until you as your service advisor what you are running. To be fair, though, the Doomsday and nonDoomsday versions of the map aren't that different in terms of performance.

Woo hoo, first reply and its the shivster himself. Thanks for the super fast response! Do you think he'll get suspicious if I ask him what version I have? So if he says it's 29.1, am I in the clear? And also shiv, what about the map switcher part? Which map is triggered with "on"?

I don't think there is any risk in calling and asking the SA what software is in your car. As for the map switcher, the ON button triggers the full boost map. OFF triggers the lower boost map.

Ahh, thanks man. So for the mean time, you're saying that I should not press the "ON" button, right? I've heard some say that the difference between the two maps are very different. Oh well, I'll just have to fight the temptation and not even keep the key fob in the car at all!

Correct if you are running the beta maps. If you are running the nonbeta maps, you can just upload the doomsday file as both map1 and map2 are 29.2/MSD81 compatible.
