This rumor is so far fetched that my head is spinning.

The Toyota/BMW rumor mill has gotten out of hand, IMHO. A V6 and I6 in the same car? Possible? Sure. Likely? No. And before someone brings up the current W213 E-Class and W222 S-Class, that's the result of Mercedes' transition from the old M276 V6 to the new M256 I6 which is a very different set of circumstances.
An IS-F resurrection makes sense. In fact, it was a major misstep for them to eliminate that model after the last generation. Using some form of turbocharged V6 instead of a naturally aspirated V8 in that model also makes sense. Although, they would be wise to target at least 475hp (and really, 500hp is where the bar is now) if they want the car to be taken more seriously by enthusiast community than the GS-F has been. But having a mid-range model with the BMW I6 adapted for the Toyota platform when they could simply use a lower power version of the V6 instead? No, that doesn't make a lick of sense. I would be more inclined to believe claims of Toyota undergoing a complete switch-over to BMW engines, at least those with six cylinders or more. Toyota is woefully behind the industry in the area of high performance six cylinder and eight cylinder engines, and BMW is near the top. Rumors of a turbocharged Toyota V8 persist, but the clock is ticking. Investing money into ICE at this time might not be right for Toyota, so simply dropping their aging V6 and V8 engine families and going with BMW mills until the ICE fades away actually makes a reasonable business proposition (or at least passes the eyeball test). |
