335i Issues & Complaints...less than a year later

edit: car is now for sale since I'm trying to get a supra

Well let me first say that overall I do love this car and don't regret my purchase. I've owned a lot of cars and this is by far my favorite daily driver that has the perfect blend of power, luxury, styling, etc., especially for around $50k...nothing touches it IMO. But I must point out a few things that have made me decide not to buy another BMW again. My biggest complaint is my Crimson Red paint. The whole car has an awful orange peel finish that looks like some Maaco repaint hackjob (okay not that bad but I'm frustrated). In direct light its pretty noticeable to the trained eye upclose, in the shade not so much. I fully detail the car every two weeks to mask the finish but its only temporary. I dont know if this issue is common with all BMW's or maybe just this particular color, or maybe its just my particular car. I'm bringing it in to the dealership asap to see what they think...they'll probably says its normal. Honestly, to spend a pretty decent amount of money on an "ultimate driving machine" and to have a paint job that looks worse than the one on my Mitsubishi Evo is lame. Next up is the A/C, or lack there of. This thing blows air thats barely cool, let alone cold, even at the MAX settting. Next comes the leather seats, they seem to wear out quickly.

Sorry you've had those issues; I would say that you may be in the minority here. Yes, it's true most of us have had some issues with our 335i's...HPFP, tail lamp malfunction, other electrical issues, etc., but not too much more if any than other cars. btw -- if you think your "next car," the Chevy 'Vette Z06 will be trouble free (or free from quality issues), then you're dreaming.

I think you are a little bit unfair with the car...

unfair? I'm simply stating the issues I'm having with the car, I'm not gouging it for alimony and child support.

SFLGATOR- You're right that this is typical with any car despite the manufacturer, nothings ever perfect and I do realize this. As for the Z06 comment...I planned on getting a Z and modding it, but based on the research I've done thats really not a good idea with the LS7 so I may just go with a ZR1 or GTR Spec-V if I can ever get one for MSRP. That way I can get big power w/ warranty & put the mod bug to rest for good.

I have to agree on the AC though...I had it on the highest setting like 30 minutes ago on my way to lunch (and it is like 95 today here in Tampa). It just was not blowing enough cold air...I will have my local dealer take a look at it for my first 1200 mile oil change next week.

Agreed, A/C doesn't blow cold enough air quickly enough for my tastes, after about 20 minutes of driving the air begins to cool rapidly but 20 minutes is too long IMO

if you could afford a GTR or ZR1 then why the heck would you buy a 335i?

for the money, you can't get a better overall car with solid performance than the 335i. but there have been some issues for sure.

I Agree with Silvrevo, I think the A/C is fantastic. On my old G35, I always had to have the A/C set to the lowest temp (I think 65 was as low as it went) and blasting, but I've have my Bimmer set at 70 all summer on lower fan settings. When it's really hot I feel like the "Max" works rather fast and when you have it down to 60, it can be downright frigid, which can be great at times.

I hear you on some of the creeks and idiosyncrasies. The storage space is severely lacking (although I find my car a lot less cluttered than I previous cars). And the engine does idle a bit roughly, but I feel like thats all part of the aura.

I'm also a big fan of the blinkers. The 3 blink works well and forces you to be a decisive driver (I only wish they could do something about forcing OTHER drivers on the road to be more decisive).

As for the leather, my car is barely 2 months old and I feel like I can already see the Terra leather being broken in. Certainly no fade or anything (and maybe I'm just at the point where its not brand spanking new) but it's something I'll be watching for.

I find the side mirrors to be a bit to small. I still havent totally adapted to where the blind spot is.

The run-flats can be a bit jarring, particularly at speed (going over expansion joints on highways, part of this could be the xi suspension) but I cant say I like the prospect of being at the mercy of the "mobile repair kit" or having a spare rolling around in my trunk.

Bottom line is, what car arent you going to have some complaints with? I certainly think the driving experience outweighs any of my complaints.

My A/C is just fine and gets plenty cold for me.

On the paint front I'd have to agree. I have sparkling graphite and my 6 year-old Mercedes c32 still has much nicer paint than the 3'er. I hear it has to do with a more environmentally friendly paint/process BMW uses but regardless the orange peel is horrendous on these cars, particularly when compared to Mercedes or Lexus.

Wierd noises? Yup, I know what you mean, between the exhaust flap and turbo wastegates I have some odd rattles and metalic sounds but I'm learning to accept them for the brilliant performance.

my car does this as well, but my HPFP has already been replaced, I think this might be normal, I also had a 2007 A4, which did the same sort of thing and it's only when the engine is cold, like in the AM before work....This could be a trait of FSI (Audi) and Whatever BMW calls their version of direct fuel injection.

I love my 335i coupe. I have owned BMWs, including 5 and 7 series model and this car is my favorite. However, I would never own this car as my only car. It is way too unreliable. My car has 13,000 miles and I have had the steering rack replaced and will soon be on my third HPFP.

I absolutely hate how those infinitys look

i love my 335. I haven't had one single issue *knocks on wood* with 13000 hard driven (mostly modded) miles. The only thing I wish we had were cooled seats

The M's are great cars (Infiniti and BMW of course ). I almost got a loaded M35 or another G35 Sedan, but one drive in the tt 335i, and there was no doubt which one would be more fun and had more potential. Anyway, for a relatively trouble free sports sedan with ALL the high tech bells and whistles, the Infiniti G35/G37 and M35/45 are great cars!

Has anyone noticed anything with the coupe seat belt retreiver? That arm that pushes the seat belt after u start the car or close the door doenst seem to work all the time. I think its the only flimsy part of this car. Its a great concept and i dont mind it missing the belt a couple times but not even comming out at times is quite odd.

yeah mine would choke up once a week or so and not go all the way back in... i think there is a recall on it lol. these platforms are all new cars for 07 but there were a lot of freakin issues either way:

1) Fuel Pump
2) Wastegate sticking
3) VANOS goes bad
4) Seat belt Arm
5) ...Feel free to add...

Just because one is financially capable of buying something doesn't mean its a wise decision to do it. Thats like saying "I made a million bucks, lets go buy a Bugatti Veyron!"....ummm no. I bought the 335 because I didn't want to wait two or more years until I could get one of the two cars I really want (ZR1/GTR specv) at MSRP. Plus it made a lot more sense then buying a RS4 or e92 M3 which are way overpriced for what you get unlike a 335i. If I would've kept my evo and waited I would've probably got the new CTS-V or a Z06...but I didn't. Last winter I sold it and didn't want to wait a year to get the new CTS-V or '09 model Z so after a lot of research and test drives the 335i was my best option and I'm glad I chose it.
