transfer case question

I have no power to my front wheels and have the 3 warning lights on (abs, 4x4 and brake). I stopped at a light a few days ago, car made a loud grinding noise and wouldn't go forward. I put in reverse and backed up some, and then into drive and I was able to forward and drove 400 mi. home. We put car on rack, started motor and put in gear but front tires didn't move-just the back ones. It's a 2008 328 xi bmw. Any ideas ??

Sounds like the clutch actuator motor in the transfer case.
Lots of info to be had on that subject in these forums.

That's kinda what I thought, but my mechanic thought that wouldn't stop power going to the front wheels. I can't find any info on that problem anywhere. I appreciate you response and if you have any info on that it would be greatly appreciated.
