I took of the oil pan and wiped it down with a rag.

Is this good enough or must the surface be perfectly clean?

Is clean but there is still left overs from the oil gasket. I use Scotch pad.

I ended up using a scotch brite pad. Everything looked ok minus some stained areas so I put everything back together.

You should be good as long as you followed the recommended pattern for torquing down the bolts. The oil pan is flat unlike the valve cover, which is on an angle. So, I don't think you'd need any extra gasket helper like Ultra Black. Ultra Black wouldn't hurt. It might give you an extra 10 to 20,000 miles of leak free driving.

I wondered this too.

I personally like using HondaBond gasket maker/sealent..

And wondered if a very light coat would be a cure all for ever doing that pan gasket again.

The way I understand it, is when doing the valve cover gasket you put a bead in the groves, press the gasket in, and put another bead on top before putting the valve cover back on head and tighten the 26+ bolts down.

I did mine that way. So far so good. I've done it other ways and no dice. 30,000 miles later it leaks.

If I were to do any gasket on this car, it would be done the exact same way.

I used hondabond when swapping out the VCG.

Install procedure was:
1. Hondabond applied to entire gasket surface area on head
2. New gasket on top of Hondabond
3. New valve cover on top of gasket

Have gone ~55k miles with no issues.

Would likely use the same process for the oil pan gasket as well w/ either Hondabond or Toyota FIPG...both have been highly regarded for decades.
