R.I.P Bridgestone Run Flat Tires

Last week, my right rear tire blew out while I was driving and I was able to safely drive another 5 miles before pulling over to a safe area at the base of the Altamont Pass in Tracy,Ca. I towed the car home from there on a flat bed tow truck. Can anyone suggest another tire to replace my RFT? I am going to replace all four tires. I have read some good reviews about the Goodyear Eagle F1's. What are your thoughts? My driving is strictly commuting to work and driving around town.

How in the hell! That doesn't look good.

At least it didn't cause you to lose control.

I just replaces my rfts with the goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric. I'm very happy with them. However, the stickier rubber only shows you how much body roll this car really has. You'll be hard pressed to find a reputable tire that drives worse than the bridgestone rfts. Anything from Generals to Michelins depending on your price range. If having an rft is important, get the new PS2.

rooster,

how many miles did you have on your rft before you replaced them? I have 19k miles and will be replacing all 4 once I find out which ones I want. The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP (RFT) are on national backorder

17k. I had bubbles on the fronts that got so big, they mad the wheel balance feel off. I was at the track with them a couple weeks before i got rid of them, I couldn't get better than a 2.2 60ft. They were so bald. The PS2 ZP are hard to come by but a set here and there can be found. Have you tried Don@tireoption?

Ascension, if you ever get the PS2 ZPs, please post how you like them. I'm thinking about these as my next set of tires.

oh man. if i were you i would send those pics to the manufacturer and the dealer's service department and demand a free tire for all the trouble that tire has caused you. I can understand a nail going into a tire but that is unacceptable.

SORRY TO HIJACK!!! FORGIVE ME.......I just have to ask.....

What are all of you doing for a spare tire???? Or are the tires you are mentioning not RF's? I looked in to a different brand RF than the Bridgestones that came on my 325I 2006 Sports Package but seems there is NO OTHER BRAND of RF's that will fit both my front and rear tires (I found one brand that fit the front and not the back--or back and not the front--two different size tires). I flirt with getting non-runflats but what happens if I get a flat? Read to stay away from "fix a flat".....no room in trunk for spare (small daugher), and no doughnut will fit my rims.

I had to replace my first set at 19K miles, second set is ready to go here in a bit at 20K miles again.....and they are SO LOUD!!! ---but so expensive!!

I think the 330's have different size tires? Maybe that is why you all have a second RF option to chose from...?? I am so frustrated. I cant get stuck on the side of the road with my daughter and commute 45 mins each way a day. I am screwed with out the option of a doughnut that will fit.

Get mobility kit from TischerBMW or one from TireRack.

I got a set of non-RFT Blizzarks for winter from tirerack and got the continental mobility kit with them. BMW one is slightly more expensive and looks better, but I was going for function not looks. They use that combo on the M3s from the factory too.

So you put on the tires and then the right one blew or did you replace the old tires after the right one blew? Also you must have hit something for this to happen no? How the hell that happen anyway?

i run goodyear F1 GS-D3 non runflats and carry the E60 retrofit spare tire kit.
clears the brakes on the 335i without a spacer. takes up trunk space, but its better than the runflats.

as you can see from the OP's incident, he had 5 miles of mobility from loss of pressure to total tire failure. i doubt he could have driven much further on that tire in the state it is in.

I got runflats for winter tires. I figure a flat in the winter can be ugly. But when my OEM summer tires kick the bucket, I'll replace them with regular tires and keep a can of fix-a-flat in the trunk.

Give this one a read. It's about Spare Tire Option.

I decided to replace all four tires after the right rear blew on the original Bridgestone rft. The front two were starting to cup, so I just decided to start with a fresh new set of tires.

THANKS Bartman! I bookmarked it!!!!!
It was in "French" to me...no idea what heck that thread said overall. What I did get is that it is about a BMW spare tire that may fit my E90 rims? And that I need to order the jack since we all didnt get one with the RFs.

Does this work on the front and the back tires (two different sizes with sports package on the E90)??

WOW! That is so great!! I dont care if I have to drive 20 mph as long as I am not stuck (I would need to call BMW/insurance co. to change the tire (put on small spare) anyway but better than a tow with a kid etc).

__________________________________________________ ___________________

Um...should I start a new thread on this topic since I am stealing Ascenstions?? Maybe polite.....

__________________________________________________ __________________

ASCENSION--Let us know how your ride is with OUT the runflats??? Seems like the way to go....Did you see that link that Bartman sent out??? NUTS!!!!

what happened to cause the tire to blow out like that? Did you hit a pot hole, or did a bubble burst? Also, how fast were you going?

Forgot to mention you need a jack and tire iron.

I bought an E46 jack/tire iron/blocker set from Tischer along with the self inflation mobility kit. I use the jack to swap winters/summers at home plus its always in my trunk, RFT or no RFTs. I got non-RFT for winter and take one OEM wheel in the car just in case the mobility thing doesn't do the job.

The E46? that one should require a spacer. unless you mean the E60 one that i posted the thread about.

Doesn't that take up your ENTIRE trunk?

Also, to the OP, any response as to what caused the tire to blow out like that -- and how fast you were going? I thought these things were supposed to hold up; even during semi-aggressive maneuvers with zero pressure (i saw it on the RFT video demonstration in the dvd bmw sent me).

Did you run these under inflated?

That blowout is a telltale symptom of running under inflated.

I'm not sure if I ran them under inflated, but I had a screw in the tire. The day before the tire blew out, I took it into East Bay BMW for it's "second annual" maintenance and the CA informed of the screw.
