6FL + Randomizer = Suck

I'm using a USB stick (32G) for my 6FL options, and so far it's been really great. Fast indexing, great quality and very convenient.

I use the I-Drive random feature to mix up my playlist (some 800 songs + about 30 albums), but I've been noticing more and more, that the randomizer simply sucks.

Often, the car will play the same songs in the same order, even if I keep skipping through. It's like the algorithem is really simple, and when it get's caught on certain songs, it plays the same songs in a string every time.

I'm forced to manually re-select another song, then put random back on. The random feature will work great for as long as a couple days (sometimes only a couple hours), then get back on one of the 3 or 4 same repeated runs of songs.

I've heard the same Etta James song like 20 times this week. Immediately after? Every time? AM Radio by Everclear (which I don't even really like )

Anyone else experiencing this?

Yup. It definitely sucks. Not to mention it thinks half of my mp3's are from "Various Artists".

When I browse by Artist a lot of my music is missing compared to when I browse by Directory. I even used Tag&Rename to make sure every single mp3 had both ID3v1 & ID3v2 tags and then renamed the drive to try and get it to re-index (which actually caused it to pick up a few more), but I'm still missing hundreds when I browse by Artist.

Random does suck.

I had this problem and I believe it came down to the mp3 tag size, try removing all the album artwork and see if that works.

I have the exact same problems. I even recreated every tag with Tag and Rename from the file path and half of my songs show up in Various Artists. My randomizer loves playing Pink Floyd's Money, Time, and The Great Gig in the Sky.

Is it happening with Ipod folks as well? I'm wondering if it's a function of simply using a flash drive...

I've heard Etta James now 18 times since monday. I'm going to have to delete her from my playlist, but then I'll just ruin some other artist.

Thanks for the tip man, but unfortunately I don't have any album artwork in any of my tags.

Go ahead and just try deleting Etta James from your USB drive. It will still be available as if you never deleted it! This was driving me crazy before. I deleted a BUNCH of music and even after renaming the drive several times, it was all still there and perfectly playable!? I think it has to do something with the fact that when you delete files, it doesn't actually nuke the data, it just flags it as deleted. Windows knows how to read this flag, but 6FL does not seem to, or at least right away. After almost a month they FINALLY disappeared!

Anyone know how to FORCE 6FL to re-index from scratch?

It doesnt happen when I use my ipod. However, sometimes when Random is selected... it wont play randomly, it just goes to the next track which gets annoying.

Using an iPod means compromised sound quality because of the analog connection that some of us are not willing to accept.

Isnt the port on the bottom of the ipod digital? If the quality is compromised in any way from using an ipod in that way, I havent noticed. It sounds incredible in my car.

Actually my 6FL came with a digital iPod cable so I'm sure it would sound just fine. I've been holding out on getting an iPod until they up the memory on the iPhone one more time, 16gb is just not enough. (I have a shuffle already but that obviously won't work). So I picked up a refurbished 40gb Firelite online for like $17.

Does using an iPod also speed up skipping tracks? Every time I want to skip a song (especially on random) it takes like 30 seconds for the next song to start playing.

I have nearly 8000 songs on my ipod and I dont usually experience more than .5 to 1 second delay between switching songs on random. Its very quick. I'm still using my old school 60gb ipod photo as well.

Ipods are for teenagers. have fun with your cool little high school gadget.

I prefer my music with no crappy portable quality DAC. Logic 7 hardware is far more superior to that crappy little apple piece.
