N54 30FE boost high code and Limp mode

Please help with my 2010 N54 engine (335i Convertible)

Under WOT @ 4k revs I got limp mode and 30FE and 3100 Error codes. I reset the codes and now anytime under WOT I get the 30FE, 3100 and limp mode. I have read every thread there is on the internet and 97% of these are related to tuning issues – but I have no tune - I'm stock. Possible causes I have read:

1. Waste gate solenoids - Some people say change the solenoids... yet others say the solenoids would only contribute to 30FF (under boost) errors. Any clarification here? Could 1 or both of the waste gate solenoids cause the waste gate to stay closed and 30FE over boost error? Another post said to clean the solenoids, how should I go about this? Also to switch the solenoids around after cleaning?

2. Sticky waste gate - What do I need to do to check for sticky waste gate? How much force should it required to move the arm when car is off?

3. Lubricating actuator arm - Again I can only see the end of the arm from underneath the car. I would have to spray oil all over the area to try lubricate the arm.

4. Vacuum lines - blockage or damage?

5. Charge pipe damage - damage

Is there anything that I’m missing? Where do I start?

check following first to baseline

4. Vacuum lines - blockage or damage? :Replace all

5. Charge pipe damage - damage, check broken if it is stock and check if it loose?

My first boost code..and only so far..was the 30FE and 3100. I changed one of the boost solenoids with an aftermarket OEM one from FCP and that fixed it. I would recommend getting some vacuum line at the same time...its cheap...and put new line in at the same time. The job isn't difficult and if you split the old rubber you'll have some to finish the job. Part was $70. Not a lot out there on 30FE but if the car isnt running bad just throwing a code at WOT or heavy driving around 4500 - 5000 rpms good chance that might fix it. Hope this helps.

Thanks GotBoost007/MEN54/buster84 for replying to my post so quickly! The car runs great (up to 4500 rpms) with no hesitation, smooth idle, good mpg (23.5) it's just throwing a code at WOT or heavy driving above 4500 rpms. As a reference I'm at 144K miles. Following all your advice, here is my plan:

1. Check for charge pipe damage or if it is loose
2. Check vacuum lines for damage etc.
3. Replace both boost solenoids (I've seen the BMWFanatic video and it doesn't look too hard)
4. If I have to - I'll replace the vacuum lines (feels like a much bigger job than solenoids - will have to see if there's a good DIY video for vacuum lines)

Hopefully that will be it. Thanks again!!

Before that post your jb4 settings and a log with it happening. This may not be turbo side related for all you know your lpfp or hpfp are going out. You should also consider new spark plugs and walnut blasting your valves if you dont know the last time they were done since your mileage is at 144k.

[Updated] [RESOLVED] N54 30FE boost high code and limp mode

Just as a reminder, my car is stock - so no JB4. I wanted to post an update for anyone wondering what I did and what the outcome was:

1. Checked the charge pipe - all OK
2. Visually checked the 'visible' vacuum lines - all seem OK
3. Replaced both boost solenoids - Much harder than I thought - very tight space - needed to remove the heat shield for the washer fluid pipe, unscrewed and moved the coolant tank to the side - the nuts at the bottom of the solenoids were the hardest to get to and remove - and was very patient and careful - no swearing I promise!

Took her for a spin and opened her up with plenty of WOT - ALL FIXED - NO LIMP MODE - NO 30FE CODE! For me the boost solenoids fixed my 30FE codes.
