Low/no boost - nasty whine under boost (video)

Hey guys.

Last night, I got into it in second gear, noticed an immediate loss of power and a whine sound under any amount of boost. It wont build more than 1 or 2 lbs now.

No smoke. If I pull the vacuum lines off the boost solenoids, no whine. No codes or limp mode. It's hard to tell exactly where the sound is coming from but it seems like it's coming from the rear drivers side of the engine. The whine doesnt sound like its coming from around the intercooler and I feel no leaks around the charge pipe.

Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas of what to check? I'm actually on vacation in OCMD so I'm in a bad spot.

It's hard to say when your only showing a video at idle, but does your car sound like this when you drive it and try to boost?

This is what my car sounded like when my turbos one of my turbos died.

Yep, sounds exactly the same driving or sitting still whenever it's trying to make boost. As soon as it tries to build boost, it whines. Did you see virtually zero boost when your turbo went?

I saw some if I reset my codes right before a pull. Max I got was about 2-3psi. After the codes hit I dont recall even seeing 1-2psi anymore. I also didnt notice any smoke coming from my exhaust until a day or two later when I still drove it. The car is still plenty drivable and safe, but really slow! Since you mentioned not being near home, just keep your driving to a minimal and drive it like you would a camry because these engines NA are slower than a 328i lol.

What turbos are you running? That video was when the exhaust propeller on one of the turbos broke. Since your car sounds like mine and doesnt make boost its probably your turbos, but to confirm I'd suggest pulling your downpipes to look for damage. Another possibility if your on stock turbos is maybe the wastegate siezed up and got stuck.

This is what I saw when I pulled my downpipes.

Ouch. Sounds like it could be the turbos. I'm running RBs... have roughly 40k or so on them.

40k on RBs sounds like some decent mileage considering they must be their earlier versions. Did you run them hard for 40k or was this mostly highway? What boost levels?

They were installed by the previous owner in 2012. I bought the car in 2014. I wouldn't say I'm hard on them but its not a daily driver so I do like to drive aggressively when I do take it out. For the last 10k or so, they've been seeing roughly 19 lbs with meth.

Not OP but my guess is one of two things, inlet popped off/leak in the ducting or turbos gone bad.

See the TIS on turbocharger whistling noise:

I smoke tested and there was no leak so it's turbos for me, unless there was something else
