BMW Plug-In Hybrids Will Soon Emit Acoustic Sounds to Protect Pedestrians

Per BMW:

From summer 2019, all plug-in hybrid models will be equipped with acoustic protection for pedestrians as standard. When driving on electric power, an unmistakable sound specially created for electrified BMW models is generated using a system of speakers. The sound produced at low speeds has been designed to announce the car’s presence acoustically without affecting acoustic comfort for its occupants.

This is a good idea. I almost got taken out by a moderately speeding Model 3 in the parking garage this morning. Doesn’t happen with ICE cars because i can hear them around the corner.

I wonder if we can code in the sound of our choice? I’m thinking i would want mine to sound like an old Wehrmacht Tiger tank...

There's a similar feature for external active sound on the BMW i8 to help give the impression of a 6-cylinder exhaust note.

I wonder if this implementation will be similar to the muffler speakers on the i8.

The fiskers do this and I kind of love it. Don't know what kind of sound the bmws will make but the sound of the fisker sounds like it's straight out of tron.

You can't just code in a different sound not already catalogued, it would require some modification of the software.
