Plazmaman Intercooler in N54
One of my new parts turned up today.
The fg 1000hp plazmaman intercooler. I tried to get Plazzmaman to make me a custom intercooler 3-4 years ago but they wouldnt at that time. The cars been down most of the past 2 years due to companies not delivering products on time. One the diff kit took 8 months and the transmission 6 months and now Ive got other custom parts coming that who knows how long they will take. So mean while I researched what size intercooler would fit and I got the closest size that would support decent power. This one is 76mm thick 420mm tall and 495mm core. It leaves about 100mm space on the sides to fit it in. This one cost just under $1400 and is a genuine 1000hp rated core. Cant wait to see the results vs the vrsf best intercooler. I'll start fitting it tomorrow and put some photos up. Last edited by Brule; 05-30-2019 at 08:42 PM.. Reason: Put capital letters in title. |

I put it in today. It fits fine but theres a few things I need to do to mount it nicely.
I need hold it from the top properly and make 2 strap braces underneath. Spent 2 hours getting it in and cut the end tanks off. Theres literally nothing in the way not sure if autos have different pipe routing but all i did was cut the plastic everwhere and theres plenty of room. No pipes or anything needing to be moved. Straight forward but will require a welded brace somewhere. I'm putting mine on the top hanging off the bonnet latch and a brace for laterial movement underneath. |

Looking forward to logs, let's see just how well/poorly the mainstream N54 stuff stacks up against a proper FMIC!

Should out perform all intercoolers.
martmil has some logs on most of the forums of his 800hp intercooler he sells. This ones a bit wider and taller so logs would be similar. Made video putting it in yesterday. As you can see theres alot of space you could even fit a 100mm core if you reduce the width. Not that you need it as the plazmaman 100mm cores start for power levels around 1300hp so it wouldnt be needed at 700hp I'm going to use it at. Last edited by Brule; 05-27-2019 at 12:55 AM.. |

Decent size intercooler, good to know it can be modified to fit. Use some cardboard to protect the fins on both sides while mucking around with it.
I damaged the fins last time fitting a front mount like that on my STi, they were a pain to straighten.

Made the brackets for the intercooler.
1 up top onto bonnet latch 1 underneath back to the subframe Total $25 for a bit if aluminium angle and plate. Add $10 if you dont have bolts and a bit of mild steel for welding to the bonnet latch. If you dont have a welder you would have to pay for that. I would get thicker material for the bracket next time as you could twist the intercooler before the bottom brace was on. Now its stiffened up and all good. I'll move onto welding the end tanks tomorrow. |

Welded end tanks on today.
First time welding aluminium was 2 days ago making the brackets. Better learning then paying someone else. Can only get better. Photos attached. |
