Cracked Windshield :(

Just got my car over a week ago and couldn't be happier (coming from a Civic this is a big improvement!).

Anyways, got hit by what looked like a small rock. Caused a tiny chip (barely noticeable) and a crack that is about 6" long and runs from the top to the side frame on the passenger side (making a triangle out of the corner).

Searching the site I found Ron's contact for repair and sent him an email to see if it's repairable.

What are the pros and cons for repairing? I was thinking about replacement but cost is a factor and I am worried about breaking the factory seal and causing leaks, etc... Since the car is leased, I suppose I will have to replace it at some point before returning the car?

If you'd just had the chip then chances would be good for a repair to be done ........ BUT, with a crack as you say ......... gonna need a replacement windshield.

I hear more good things about Safelite (I think that's right) Auto Glass within the forum with regard to replacement.

Sucks ...... GL.

I had a chip filled on the Civic but never dealt with a crack before. Surprised because I've been hit by much larger rocks without damage, but from what I've read the BMW windshield is quite fragile.

Yeah, it seems that (along with the non-metallic paint) the front glass is somewhat "soft". Within the first week of ownership I received 3 small "indentations" in my windshield.

If the cracks have both digressed to the edges of the windshield then chances are there won't be any more cracking ......... if the chip is splintered then it'll only get worse.

You're definitely going to have to replace it. There is no way to fix a crack in the windshield.

I just had my windshield replaced and it was just for scratches (right in my line of sight). Call your insurance company. They'll more than likely refer you to Safelight as I was and it'll be replaced (it cost me $250 for the deductable, but your insurance may be different). The total windshield was just over $1000.

I had a stone hit my windshield last week as well. I went to see Ron and unforturnately he said my can't fix becasue he can reach the inside becasue of the dashboard. But what he told me was there are 2 layers of glasses, only the outside cracked...so it is still safe to drive. if it doesn't border you, don't need to change until before you return your car. Hope that help!!
