328i DISA valves took a dump.....
At 12 years and 148k miles....the DISA valves bit the dust.
Started as a rattle, and in short order it turned into a rumble like a badger was trying to claw its way out of the intake manifold! The larger one was weathervaning.... and depending on engine speed, it was getting quite excited! ![]() I swapped out both of them, as long as I was pulling the intake off. Start to finish it's about a 4 hour job. Some folks made it seem like a big ordeal. It's not. You dont need much beyond a 8mm, 10mm, T25 and T27 torx and a few hand tools. Dealer wanted almost $960 for both of them! Pelican wanted $600 for their cheaper version offered by REIN Rock Auto sold the exact same REIN part for $400, so thats how I went... Intake O-rings added another $28 to the deal. The shocker? Check out how clean the ports, guides, and valves are at almost 150k miles!! It looks like its never been run. ![]() In every gas car I have, I use Liqui Moly Injection Cleaner. I think most stuff similar to this is just snake oil.... but this stuff flat out works! I dump in a can the first weekend of every month. I dont look at the fuel level, I just dump in it. Sometimes its a low on fuel for a heavy dose. Sometimes Its full for a light dose. 12 cans a year is about $100. I think its $$$ well spent. After I changed those damm DISA valves, it runs like a top. |

Nice work. Keep an eye on the aftermarket valves though - they never seem to last

Well... good news to report.
For the life of the car, the mileage has been pretty poor. The DIC always shows about 17.5mpg with mixed driving ( 60% city / 40% highway) The cars gone 1,000 miles since the DISA swap, and the DIC is showing 24 mpg with the same mix! Drivability is much improved, bottom end power is stronger and smoother. I have been chasing this poor mileage thing forever, with tune up, O2 sensors, etc... If you have having unexplained poor mileage, DISA valves might be the cause.... It never showed any codes to them not performing..... |
