Will an E92 M3 diff fit onto a 335i?

Hi there, I have managed to secure an E92 M3 diff from a wrecked M3. Will this bolt onto an E90/E92 335i?

It would most likely fit but then where are the supporting electronics? It is electronically controlled and we do not have the needed hardware.

What you mean? It's just a diff isn't it. I have swapped the diff on my E46 M3 to a 4.11. Was a straight pumpkin swap, there were no electronics. But maybe I'm confused.

The new M3 has a variable lock diff which is electronically controlled.

I don't understand. I have the pumpkin right here in front of me. There are no plugs or jacks for any electronics. I'm talking about the actual LSD portion. Wait let me get some pics to show you what I mean.

What electronics are you guys referring to? The M3 has a mechanical LSD. Not the e-diff or whatever that the 135 has.

I just recall reading information as to this. The BMW website isn't too descriptive but I imagine a broshure may provide more details.

Dunno dudes, the E46 M3 and the E60 M5 also have a fully variable diff. They call it the M-diff. But the variable part is the way the mechanics of the diff work inside. Don't see any electronics here on this M3's diff. Anyone got access to the parts system to confirm?

Are you sure that the diff is electroinicly controlled by the way it locks or are you talking DSC?

It would seem to me that the DSC should work fine on the new diff and the mechanics of the diff would be fine.
Now DSC would kick in once both tires broke loose.

All I have to say is that it would be supa expensive if it could be done.

Not electronic, it relies on a pump driven by the difference in wheel speed. There's a special name for that type of pump but I can't recall.


To answer the OP, no and for the same reason we cant drop other unit in easily, you cant get the ring gear off, additionally you likely have some size issues and bolt/spline compatibility issues.

Thank you. That's what I was looking for. I don't think they need to get the ring off. We are swapping the whole unit. I didn't get a chance to see if will bolt directly onto the sideshafts or whatever. That's basically what I'm asking about. Will the whole diff bolt onto the shafts. Like take out 335 diff, bolt M3 diff on. The bolt pattern looks the same to the naked eye, but I need to get the car up in the air and check.

Why? Have you tried or know for a fact that the subframe mounting points are far off from one another? Or is it the halfshafts?

You can get a Quaife for less than 4k ( whole pumpkin, no core exchange ) now. Tested and confirmed to work on the 335i. Autos and manuals. Seems to be more feasible to me.

Yea I know it sucks. The half shafts have a different bolt pattern and the drive shaft uses a completely different locking mechanism. Not to mention the dimension differences.


I have a clutch LSD on my car (costs about 4k new) that I will be selling hopefully in about a month. Might be a good opportunity since you seem to either know how to work on cars or know people who do.
