Look what I got today...
I wish I could say I got my V3s today, but I haven't yet. Although! I did receive my Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec 245/45/ZR17 that I'll be tearing through, my Pagid Yellows I'll be using to tear into the tires, and some OEM brackets and such for the Hotchkis Brace I'm waiting for...
Hope you enjoy, and I'll update on how those Pagids do at the track. I'll have the yellows up front and Porterfield R4E's on the rear. As always, thanks to: -The Tire Rack -Turner Motorsports -GetBMWParts.com

yes, yes they are. Go Tischer!
Really everyone I've been dealing with has been fantastic. Turner has the coolest parts, Tischer can get any OEM part for like...$0, The Tire Rack is lightning fast, Mod Bargains are the nicest people in the world, HP Autowerks are geniuses, VK Motorwerks is just the coolest company. There are a ton of companies in this community that just need infinite ![]()

how many track days do you have under your belt?
are all these fast parts for you daily driver? why are you dropping dollars on going faster? why are you comfortable with your DD being your race car instead of getting a dedicated race car? if this is a lease, these parts will need to come off in a year or 2 right? Pardon jumping you with questions. But, these are all questions that I think many of the noobs (me in particular) have. I guess all of these questions are answered if your portfolio is 100% exxon/mobil. ________ The Legend Condos Last edited by satakal; 08-16-2011 at 06:54 PM.. |

I have 6 track days under my belt, 10 autocrosses. I'll be doing (Edit: now that I think about it I'm doing somewhere around 10 or 12) more days this year and as many as possible next year. However, those 6 days aren't just 6 days that I went to to have fun. I started in autocross to have fun and loved it so much I promised myself I'd be doing either time trials or racing within the 2 years following. After every mod I've done (I've only done sway bars so far...) I've gone to one autocross focussing on taking advantage of that mod. I only started modding after....6? 7? autocrosses and the mods so far are minor at best. Before every track day I study the course and watch chase cams and the like. I've been reading as many racing technique and car tech related books as I have time for. At track days I am not too self conscious to get instructors every run. At autocrosses I am not too self conscious to get instructors every run. I constantly ride along with my instructors and have gotten myself to quickly do exactly what they tell me to. After each event I go back and see where I went wrong and translate what the instructors were saying into what I need to practice and what I need to change about my car. I've taken my line to the street (my last instructor stressed how street lines are big proponents of early apexes ![]() I didn't start modding until I was in the Intermediate (HPDE 2) group with NASA. At my last track event the instructor insisted that I move up the HPDE 3 (he didn't make me, he just STRONGLY suggested over and over and over again) and gave the caveat that I am reaching the limit of my brakes (thus the brakes...I was getting pad fade), my tires are fine (they ran out, thus the Direzzas, just trying something new), and the suspension could use some work (the only thing available worth getting for the xi is the V3 ![]() These "fast" parts are for my car that I am currently driving daily that I am trying to find an alternative such that I can make it my dedicated track car. I am not dropping dollars on going faster, unless you count track time as spending dollars on going faster. These mods are not intended to make me faster (if so I'd just get a tune and call it a day). The mods I'm installing are meant to make my car feel like what I want it to feel like. This is not a lease, if so it would remain stock and I'd be pissed off all day every day because my car drives like a whale. I have enough money at the moment and little enough debt that I can spoil my car a bit. At the moment I have an OK paying research job and my only hobbies that I'm spending money on right now are racing and homebrewing. Luckily brewing beer is cheap as all hell when compared to racing ![]() Sorry for the lengthy response but I know I will get the response of "stop spending money on your car" but I can assure you I am doing my best to earn the mods. Also, the money IS going into a race car. It's just a race car that is currently being driven on the street while I pay for all the work to make it a race car...

If I were at the point of buying my own brake pads, I'd be thinking race car instead of race the DD. Thats what I say this week. Who knows what I'll be thinking when I have been on track as much as you?

In my situation, it would take one shit ton of mods to equal the cost of my car. So, in my eyes, I'd rather spend the money I'd spend on "a race car" on a tow rig that I could use as a DD and learn on a streetish car. Remember that I am still learning. I don't think I would be BUYING a full on race car until I have at least a few years of track time under my belt. This way I am forcing myself to reach the maximum potential of a part before changing it, and forcing myself to progress as a driver instead of being fast because of my car.

Oh also, realize that you 335i guys have it nice with your LOW LOW ZSP suspension. the 335XI guys get screwed as our ZSP suspension is higher and softer

But with some mods (suspension, camber, lsd, tires, brakepads and fluid, tune), the 335i is right up there with an R8 and about 2 seconds (on a 2 minute lap) slower than a stock C6 Z06. And it's quite nice, on those cold early season track days, to run with your butt warmers on. Can't do that in a stripped out E36 M3. ![]() |

Well, kinda.
I also have a perfectly fine pickup sitting in the garage if something happens, or the car is on jackstands for a week or two. The idea of race car isn't so much me wanting to go wheel to wheel. But of me wanting to be in something that already has a lsd. And the wear components will be 1/2 the price of the bmw stuff. If for some reason something bad/stupid happens like tranny, engine, rear end, etc and I'm on the hook for fixing it, I'd much rather it be on something like a miata. But, I have put my money into tires and wheels and brake fluid. And oil changes. But, I'm letting the dealer cover pads and rotors and 1 in 3 oil changes. I have this dumb idea in the back of my head. It is: the 335 is so capable it covers up my mistakes. With my awareness still in the beginner lvl, I'd rather my mistakes be obvious. And costly. (in terms of lost time or exit speed. not dollars.) For that reason, I really, really like the idea of a momentum car as a learning vehicle. Is it obvious that I want to be like S4to335 when I grow up? :-D ________ WASHINGTON MEDICAL MARIJUANA Last edited by satakal; 08-16-2011 at 06:54 PM.. |
