Dual cone / aFe intake or Gruppe-M
Hi,
A lot of discussions around intakes on the forum. Anybody knows about the Gruppe-M gains and it's street-price ? Space concerns with Forge DV's ? Thanks, Eugen |

Id say the dual cones vs the Afe is really the only battle here, and even that, I imagine that they are roughly on par with each other performance wise. Within a reasonable amount of variation on both dynos to claim that statistically, they are roughly comparable. The Afe is certainly a better fit/finish, but the dual cone works good too, personal taste at that pt

Afe is for shure the best up to now. but im still hoping for the performance intake from BMW. I would like it more "stock look"
So I wait and see.

The GruppeM has a single filter and it's very small.
The main thing with the GruppeM is that it's making the OEM box into a ram air design. The best thing that the GruppeM has going for it is the looks. The AFE has both looks and performance.

Don't most people get intakes like this primarily for engine-bay bling anyway? I've never really gotten the impression that G-M was competing for motorsports money.

I have noticed though that people care more about parking their cars at meets with their hoods open instead of driving them at a track. Yes, I care about what the engine bay looks like to an extent since I don't want it looking like a 10K Honda civic engine bay, but I want performance!

As Mr. 5 said, this is really sad. The AFE is close to what I'm looking for, if it had a top-cover and the same volume ( without big printed AFE on it ), it would be perfect for me. I'm still waiting for an airbox.

I was just stating that I am looking forward to it, sorry if that offended your engineering background....

You keep saying that, but who has proven that dual cones are better than single with substantial evidence? Sure, it seems like 2 filters would give more surface area and all, but is that really the bottleneck? The UR intake provides great gains and uses just one filter as does the Logic intake. I have dual cones, btw.

Maybe he has to state that in every intake thread to justify his purchase?

If the G-M unit is of a similar design to their other stuff then it won't make power. We did a massive amount of testing on their E46 M3 intake kit and it was well, poor results are an understatement.

Main diff is that heat shield, but we're still not seeing isolated dynos on Dual cones vs aFe dual cones...
I say you go with this one: or this one, I just made it. Last edited by darkphantom; 08-14-2008 at 02:58 PM.. |

+1 for me. The box for the E46 looks good. Data on how the different intakes affect performance is sometimes apples and oranges. BMW, for example, will give what I think are realistic and reliable numbers. What we modders get testing stuff on neighborhood Dynos is a different kettle of fish. It is useful to see what the racing crews are up to as well. Turner MS and some of the other quasi-independent tuners often provide really good advice.
