2011 335d, 186,000 miles. So my timing chain snapped while driving slow speeds. Haven't torn into engine but i can see the cam does not move. Cheaper to fix valves myself or just get a low milage m57 engine?(3-5g's)

I'm quite surprised to hear that the timing chain is recommended to be replaced around 150k miles. Is this something that most owners get done as regular maintenance? I ask because this is this first time I've seen anyone on this forum suggest it as a maintenance item....

I actually remember reading somewhere on here that the timing chain was not an issue on this motor and would not have to be replaced. Looks like I may be doing a timing chain in the next 50k, rather deal with that than a motor swap

Oil used? Driving style? Weather?
I hear Wisconsin has 4 seasons: June, July, August, and winter! |

Owned car for 4 months. Did all fluids/maintenance when i bought it. Deleted and tuned. 2.9 malone. Reading other post, the x5d has this issue. And about 2-3 a year seem to happen on the 335d. As for driving patterns, i was easy on it 99% of the time trying to get that 40 mpg's. Junk yard motors are $3-5,000. So im loss on what to do next. Loved the car

From my research it is recommended at 150k miles but they can last to 300k and over. I could not find any BMW literature on this yet. It’s an awful job with dropping the front subframe and dropping an oil pan to get to the oil pump sprocket. All guides, tensioner and sprockets should be replaced at the same time. But hey at least you don’t have to drop a tranny as N series require.

Pretty much the first time I've heard it too.... I'm at 228k with no knowledge of previous maint. The Timing chain is quite the job, dang.

very up to date topic! there is a youtuber with 530d diesel never version whose timing chain snapped, only someone pointed out that he used shortly before mannol oil that doesn't have bmw ll04 certification!
I also read that timing chain is most of the time failure of the owner not changing oil properly on time, or used bad oil! what was your oil interval change? chain is not something that would fail! it is when the engine have restricted lubrication that causes it to fail btw! I believe there is very rare when chain snaps due to the fatigue of the material (of course can happen but not as nearly as ppl saying you need to change it at 150k or whatever) of course it might not be related, but I believe it is. Timing chain lifespan is directly proportional to oil service quality. By that, I mean using an appropriate diesel-rated oil for soot control, appropriate service interval, and filtration. There are a lot of ways to recombobulate those three things into a timing chain that wears out prematurely, lasts literally indefinitely or somewhere in between.
