Question on JB3, service, and leases

I just got the JB3 with the pre 29.2 maps and installed it onto my leased 07 335i with pre 29.2 Progman. I am due for service shortly and want to know if I do the oil change myself and reset the indicator will I have any issues at lease end? Do they track whether you actually did all of the services at 15k and 30k? I'm guessing they aren't required, they are just "perks" but I figure doing my own $50 oil change is better than getting flashed to 29.2, having lag, and having to get the less powerful JB3 maps. Thoughts?

they track, you should do it, and you get free brakes!

remove the jb3 before you do it

So I'll really have issues with my lease if I don't get the service done at a BMW dealership? Can't I just say I have a friend that's a mechanic and he did my service? I mean, it's just an oil service. I can do it myself and reset the counter. I don't think free brake pads at some point (which I don't even need yet) are worth having to deal with the lagginess of 29.2.

I would just call your Service Adviser and ask him what records you need to keep if you get your oil service done elsewhere.

I was hoping to avoid calling them all together. I wasn't even going to take it somewhere else, I was just going to change my own oil and reset the counter. I just wanted to know if the services at BMW were REQUIRED as part of the lease agreement. I'm really trying to avoid 29.2 if at all possible.

Do they automatically update your Progman to 29.2? I thought they only did that if you were having issues that could be attributed to the software. Also, if you are friendly with your SA, you could just ask them not to update your software, as you aren't having any problems, and you have read some of the lag issues, etc. people are having.

I am in the same boat as you. I currently have JB2 and will be getting JB3 shortly, but I have my first oil change coming up in a little over a month. Currently I am pre-29.2, so I would hate to buy it now and have the dealership upgrade my software. I think I am going to talk to my SA and wait until after the oil change to order, just to be safe.

I've heard of people being automatically updated even if they asked not to be. I'm not having any issues so I definitely don't need the update.

this is one of the down-sides of leasing... and of BMW being pricks about mods.

Same boat as you. Oil changes, basic general maintenance - I am doing it all myself and saving receipts. Obviously, with warranty repair work I will have to bring it in and risk being updated to the latest progman.

If your software is updated, just connect the grey looms. No biggie, just lost of torque and DPs are not allowed.

If you have a tune it should fix whatever lag you are having problems with in most cases. Here is the thing. One of the selling points of the car is the free service and you are going to avoid that because of a tune?

If you have a three year lease most likely the car will get update at some point. Just get the 29.2 and call it a day.

If your progman version gets updated past 29.2, you will need a new chip with the 29.2 maps send to you from BMS. You will also need to make sure (if you have the pinout version), that you intercepted the extra wire.

Downpipes will throw you over the edge and trigger codes on post 29.2.

Can you support that with some links? I haven't seen anything else mentioning that

Here's a question and quote from Terry

"wow so this means that a car with v81 and downpipes will need an adjusted map? im sure the adjustments would be to pull back a bit of torque to keep it under the radar. So in a way, it would be pointless to do downpipes and have the tune pull its gains?

am i understanding this correctly ?"

"I think you hit the nail on the head... You may see some high RPM gains though, its just the benefit is nerfed."

I don't feel like I'm missing much by "avoiding service" just for the tune. I'm basically spending $50 to do my own oil change rather than getting it done for free and getting a laggy car and an updated less powerful map. That sounds like it may be worth $50 based on reading the complaint thread for 29.2. I am also currently talking to a friend that knows someone that is a BMW tech that may be able to take care of me. We'll see what happens. I would have no problem taking it in as long as I was sure I wouldn't be updated.

Took my car in this AM for some warranty work. I specifically stated that if it needs to have a reprogram to CALL me before hand. My thought was that I could talk them out of it. The SA wrote on the work order A) do not reprogram and B) if it REALLY needs it to call the customer first. I explained to the SA that I have heard about the 'lag' that is produced from the reprogramming and I would prefer to wait to "upgrade" when BMW figures this out.

Also, FYI, my SA asked if I wanted a car wash. Jokingly I said yes only if it could be hand washed...sure enough that was written on the work order and HIGHLIGHTED and I was assured that it would only be done this way. Whether or not it will be done is another story...kinda like asking for Decaf at a busy diner

So, from what I found, as long as you have no issues that are ONLY solvable by a reprogram, then asking will keep them away from the internals of your ECU.

BTW, I also did a 12,000 mile oil change by buying the oil at Pep boys (cheaper than BMW), the filter at BMW and took it to Jiffy for them to change for $30. Im not ready for my first change but Im old school and decided to change it before the recommended interval, which still says 8000 miles to go.
